permanently recalled from Wash
ington. Secy. Blaine has been Indisposed
much of tho time since this aflalr.
It was evidently not a slight error
on his part to bri ug the state govern
ment of Louisiana into his first
reply, when tho federal constitution
forbids recognition of a stato by a
foreign power. It is not behoved to
be good diplomacy to introduce such
a quibble. Blaine should have
given prompt assuranco that the
federal government would demand
tho fullest investigation aud repara
tion. A Washington special In the Sun
day ptpors foreshadows Blaine's
further policy. Ho will represent
tho evils of unrestricted immigra
tion from Italy and array tho facts
as to tlio number of crlmo3 commit
ted by the criminals Italy has sent
to this country. Ho will also show
that datigerous secret societies of
these criminals are now existing.
It is to bo regretted that both
these contentious aro not to tho
point in tho caso. Italy will not
deny theso matters. They aro uot
in tho caso directly. Tho point
Italy continues to make is that four
Italian subjects were killed by the
mob and that our federal govern
ment when asked to bring the
leaders of tho mob to justice has
not acted promptly lu demandiug
that of tho local authorities, and has
not given a satisfactory roply or
oxcuse for not so doing. Tho houor
of the Italian government Is wound
ed not by tho killing of tho four
Mafia so much as by lack of respect
ful diplomnoy at Washington.

This has again hastened into
pretnpt action that element of mob
violence that seems to bo an instinct
of self-preservation iu not very
highly developed civilizations.
Itoso and Edwards, ouco convicted
of murdering Jens Fredrickson and
wife, on the confession of a bou of
George Rose, were riddled with bul
lets Saturday In tho jail at Oyster
vlllo. George Rose,tho principal witness,
whoso turning state's evidence had
sent tho two above named victims
of the mob to tho gallows, had beon
forcibly removed from jail and kept
hidden away. Having thus dis
posed of tho only person whoso tes
timony could convict, Rose and
Edwards induced their lawyors to
take their caso before tho supreme
court and a new trial was granted
them. It was tlio grantlug of this
new trial, uudor tho abovo circum
stances, that caused tho riolfiut mob
feeling to riso. The supremo couit
of Washington saved them from tho
gallows to turn them over fo tho
merciless mob.
It Is not probablo that tho supremo
court could havo takon notice of tho
removal of tho principal witness
against tho accused, tho' that re
moval was or a highly suspicious
character, and a now trial undor the
circumstances, with practically no
ono to appear against them, was vir
tually to turn loose upon society two
murderers and dangerous, reckless

brutal, coldblooded murder of poor
Jons Frederickson nnd his fair,
young wife, who wcro killed for a
few acres of land, has boon avenged,
and tho dead bodies of John Rose
and Jack Edwards, riddled with tho
bullets of a mob aro lying in the jail
at Oystervlllo. Ever since tho su
premo court reversed tho decision of
tho Pacific county court and granted
a now trial to tho men who werosen-
tonced to bo hanged last November,
there has been a muttering of dis
content among tho frleuds of the
murdered man. This Bontiment
came to tho ears of Rose's attorney's
and thoy Immediately took Bleps
toward having tho men removed to
a placo of safety. Judgo Hunter
wont over on tho boat Friday and it
was tho intention to remove the
pilsoners to Chehahs county yester
day. When this fact became known
tho air was full of rumors to the
effect that Rose and Fdwards were
to bo lynched.

or eight shots wore fired, and John
