Thero wasn musical recital at the university chapel this afternoon from 3 to -1 o'clock. Tho chapel was well filled by music loving people. The Marlon county, commis sioners' court met Thursday in full Mission and transacted u large amount of business. The following is the preceedings: In tiic Matter of the opening of the Shepherd and Rowland road, the report of the viewers was read tho first time. A rebate of taxes was allowed Mr. Elliott on a $.100 mortgage to Jeff Myers. A petition was read for a road from tho O. & C. It. II. track at Dan Clarke's d. 1. e. to the Parrish gap road, and tho viewers nnd surveyors were appointed. In the matter of the Kerr and Choqucttc road a motion to strike out tho report of the viewers allow ed and referred hack to same view ers and surveyor to re-survey said road, they to meet on the 17th day of June, at 10 u. m. The court allowed Wm. Manning a rebatoof $7001 on taxes of 1889. A petition to allow Towuscud b- forsuryoylng Pudding river bridge. Mr. Dawson, supervisor of road district No. 39, having been re moved, William Byunts was ap pointed in his stead. It was ordered that Brown, super visor near Mt, Angel, be directed to rebuild tho brldgo over Simmons creek and shorten the sumo n much as possible. Ordered that the county Measurer bo ordered to turn over the revolver taken from tho man Smith, who committed suicide by drowning, to H. It. Mason, tho owner. In tho matter of tho road from Salem tol Turner and Jefferson, viewers and surveyors were appoint ed. In tho matter of tho road from tho Salem and Argontl road to tho southwest corner of sec, 11, t 8 s, r 1 o, it was ordered that Sam Arnold, S. Brown nud Q. Schram bo appoint ed vlowers and W.J. Culver survey or, to meet at tho placet of beglulm; on tho 2-Uh day of June, at 10 a. in., to locato tho same. Tho taxes of Mrs. Whitney, a blind women, were ordeied remitt ed. It was also ordered that Sol Cox, supervisor of district No. 1, be allowed $50, for ro-opoulug county road iu his district. Ordered that J. E. McCoy bo allowed $80 for work on the Salem brldgo wreck. Tho county clerk was ordered to send u bill to tho city of Salem for $105 tor work on tho bridge. Tho court Is to-day viewing bridges in the northern part of tho county. Thoy conveue ngaln In this city Saturday at 0 o'clock m. A .Strong Effort Made to Effect a Settlement and Close Up the Business. Some ilfty farmers of the Jefferson neighborhood, who had had wheat stored In the mill warehouse there and who recently closed It up and took possession of the property, met in tho town hall of thut city Wed nesday afternoon for the purpose of ascertaining the exact condition of affairs, nud if possible come to some agreement as to the proper bash upon which tho proceeds of the avnilublo assets can be divided. It was an important meeting, ami as several Jouhnai. le.iders are di rectly Interested in tho outcome, a reporter of UiIh paper was on liaud to work the doings, nnd was given tho courtesy of tho hall, although all not directly interested were ex eluded from the deliberations. Hon. Tilmon Ford, of this city, was sent for to examine into nil the facts nud give legal and friendly ad vice as he deemed most likely to lead, to a fair nud amicable settle ment. Mr. P. Bagley, chairman of the five trustees, was the heaviest ile um! tor, nnd tho gieat point of contention is over tills gentlemen's grain. It is claimed by some of the parties thut u portion of his wheat was purchased lrom the mill com pany utter the shortage began to occur and that he knew of the Hhortuge, therefore that his lecelpts are invalid and should not he taken into account in tho division of the assests. A large number of others ale for sustaining Mr. Bagley in his claim. Alter deliberations reaching to al most durk, Mr. Ford made out an agreement which allows Mr. Bagley ull the wheat ho claims, and pro vides that all resources shall oo di vided equally prorata among all de positors who had wheat there at the time the shortage was discovered. This was signed Immediately by some 20 present, their desire being to avoid possible litigation. The money for flour and wheat sold Is not yet all In, but It is calculated that under tho above arrangements about 48 cents per bushel will bo netted to all parties.
