ESyNo trouble to bbow g.io.lB. SATURDAY MtlUT sUL.ILOQUUCS. Anyone who writes a good deal mint be convinced of tho futility of always having something worthy writing, or of being able to write something worthy reading. But an earnest, frank talk once a week does an editor good, whether his readeis ate benefitted or not. By Jtmt let ting oneeICout once In a while and speaking froin the heait without ic serve, .even an editor keeps in sweeter tfeni'per the testof the week. So In our Saturday night talks on paper we do not so much aim at perfect coherency, as we do at main taining perfect eoutldcnce with our faithful a 1 1-t h e-res t-o f-t h o-w c e k readers. We know some of them will understand us, and that i a good deal. ' One might think that to limit dis cussion, by laying certain restraint upon the-'rango. .of one's thouHt, would narrow up the channels of d scours. and still further attenuate my slight thread of philosophy our Saturday night talks mightcontain. But, not so. When wo taboo poll tics ntid religion wo place our selves outside the trammels of plat forms and creeds and, ignoring all dlntluctionsof pirty and creed, wo our able to addross our readers upon the broad bisls of a common humanity and can muster a good t'lought, placo It unreservedly and in perfect frankness before a com mon brotherhood. Nothing that Is obtained so cheap ly is clung to so do irly as our preju dices. The existence of tho preju dice and Intolerance there is in the world is only accounted for on the tneory of a general vein of depravity, or a general stato of ignorance among mankind. Wo have been Impressed all this week with the necessity of greater charity and toler ation towards others by so many glaring examples of lack of these virtues. It lias almost seemod to us that it was a mlraole thathuman Ity makes any progiess at all, when so many promlne.it factors, that might be exerted for the uplifting of the masses, are used more as clubs to beat them down and draw insldu oils, unfair distinctions, that only appeal to prejudice and ignoraneo ami intoIcrnuuQ. For InstniiiM., a so-called great newspaper contains references to tho excessive fatness of a celebrated great man of the nation. It dwells upon it and dilates upon It. Comments upon his weight and tho thickness of his nock. Does all this in the name of politics and for political efl'ect. What sumllness! What manly nun wants to catch himself pointing his linger at another olti zen and say: You nro too fat, sir, therefore you are not tit to be presi dent! Or, you weigh fifty odd jHiutida too much, therefore your party Is nat lit to be trusted with the affairs ortho nation! 0 i! This Is small-potato Journalism, indeed, Wh it has the great lover of piogroM Jouniiillsni to do with u manV avoirdupois? Nothing! It is bosh! It is RATS! It is a reflection upon tho intelligence of the age, thin small-boy method of the prims run ning nut Its tongue and crying of our public moil, you are too fleshy, or you are too skinny. Time enough to do that when we buy our nfllciaW on I he scales like oxen, tho' hoiuo won! I bring more that way than whon put on Iho maiket (or tried and trusted cjuulltles. But what wo prott-ht agaicst is that every human b.-ii g bus a sacred right to bo let alone as to their personal char acteristics, and allowed to go through life unmolested in tho outward lineaments tho Maker saw tit to clothe them in, What a simple, narrow, carping, brainless, hearties?, soulless attitudo that Is to get one's self Into, to dis cuss people on their physical ap pearance, and attempt to make cap ital out of thnt? How It tends to shrivel up one's sympathies aud limit ono's influences? But there are other methods nearly as bad, we read tho other day of n council of clergymen that tried to lay down tho rule that the use of tobacco disqualifies a man from preaching the gospel. They lacked ono voto of making thnt a rule, aud Users of the weed might still become soul-savcre. But next day another minister I came and they had enough votes to carry It aud so declared that hence forth no user of the weed should bo allowed to dlsponso tho gospel of Jesus Christ, which they nro eom innuded to preach to all men, tho tobacco users Included. They might ust as well.lmve gono a step further and declared that no tobacco user should ever enter tho kingdom of heaven. What has tho whole mat ter to do with Clirlsi'a coming on earth, and with tho mission of sal vation lie boro to all tiicti? Noth ing! It is one of tlio.so small ways of asserting that we are more vlttuous than another man In a small matter, and parading that small fact as a great vlr- j tiiL',when wo muy at heart bo a great deal baser than the individual wo are trying to draw our invid ious distinction against. For any preacher to advertise his excellence in so small a matter,!? to brand him self asa pcdlcrof pciuiulmornllty that often will not bear Investiga ting. So wchiw recently In a report qf a certain convention that men who used liquor or tobacco were conspicuous for their nut-euce. Well ( what of It? It was simply vaylng j to the world that the paity which boasted of holding htich a conven tion was not broad enough for tho general run of humanity. Wo re spect tho sentiments of those who would abolish eVll from this world. Wff know that If a farm raises over so good crops of all kinds, but turns of Va b id crop of saloon-loafing boys, it Is not a success. Wo know tobac co is a filthy thing, and it is money in any man's pocket to get rid of tho habit. But wo know too that good, honest, hard-working men, who love their wives, support their families, pay taxes, and try to voto intelligently, use liquor aud tobacco. For a political party to put itself Into n hostile, unfriendly attitude towards them is for such a party to make itself incapable of doing the state any service, and still less of being any benefit to those very men It would help. Let a man be right himself, be cause it is right to bo right, (but not to enable him to assert his moral superiority), and then let him by his good example, by Ills intelli gence, by his kindly, friendly lovo for his fellowmau exert a good in fluence upon him uiid much more good will be accomplished. Wo know this teaching will not be ac cepted by those who aro Impatient of results. They will say wo are in for tomporl.lug with evil and want to be too generous, etc But wo suy thai the moment one man puts a bar of unklndness and hostility be tween himself and his brother man, whether it bo moral, religious or political, that moment lie Ioh'b in lulluenco over him aud destroysall power for good liu might have exerted. We seek too much to el evate our neighbor by ufcHoitlng to him our own alleged superior viri ues. If we have them lie will discover It. We need not advertlso tho fact. Tho moment wo do ory up our su perior moral wares ho begins to grow critical and will stubbornly ic filso to confess that his morality Is a shade Inferior to ours, or that his w.ays are not just as ilghtcous as ours, There aro certain limits to influence, which, if transcended, convert our exertions into opposite. We cannot extend our Influence fur good by limiting the number of thuo who are upon friendly enough terms to stop and listen to us. In these dtijs of general Intelligence wo cannot spread our gospel as did Mahommud by offering Iho HWord as the only alternative. If wourouso men's hostilities we will find them still as lirmly wedded to their er rors as were the Templars to lliucroi in tho crusades, who every ono chose death rather than apostasy to his faith. THIS JtKI'UIII.IC iN COUNTV TJIJKKTi All three pari Ion have now placed county tickets In the Held aud tho cholco between the men who arc to represent tho pcoplo In the county and state govemmentnud in tho con gress and' United States senate will will liave to bo made by the voters between now and election day. AVc 1 bellovo tho republican party has put forward men who will bear tho clos J est scrutiny nud who will In the cud prove faithful to tho trusts reposed in them by tho pcoplo If elected. Our stato ticket Is in istly composed of men who havo been prominently before tho pcoplo nud aro of such well known character that no Intro duction from us Is ncce-ssiry. Con gressman Hermann will bo returned for a third term and this state will grow In prominence and influence in national affairs by keeping a tried and trusted man ot ability In tlie lower hoiesc. Wo bellovo Air. Hermann Is iv truo ft lend of tho massss, and will receive n largo vote oufsldo of his party. The members of the county ticket who aro now In ofllce nro, at far as we can learn, men of irre proachable character and honest nnd faithful friends of the masses. Wo presume aa good ones have bten chosen for the balance of the ticker. As newcomers here the editors of the Jouunaij must bo permitted to state that they aro not-no well quail fled to recommend tho rest of the county nnd legislative ticket as per sons who havo lived iiero many years. Our county ticket was nomi nated before the state Republican platform was adopted. It must be supposed that nil stand sqtiaicly on that platform and how tho candi dates for the House and Senate stand on tho subject of United Slates Sen ator wc presume will be developed as tlie county canvass proceeds. Wo aro among those who bellovo In absoluto responsibility to tho Will of the majority, and that rcpresenta thuuf tho pcoplo is tho foundation of fcelf-governiuent. That is tlie only way to make tho leptiblican party strong and keep for it tho con fidence of tho masses. When pco plo feel that platforms no longer mean anything, but are Just put up to catch voten vlth, that aro after wards to bo bartt'ied oil' for personal purposes, tho averago voter will wreak his vengeance ou tho party. We do not bellevo that our plat form la a mere string af words put up for campaign purposes. Wo as sume that It is meant to bo sacredly carried out and that mon running on the lepubllcau ticket are sacredly pledged to honestly nnd fairly do that thing so far as It Is in their power. Wo do not assume that all that Is put into any plat form Is c ncentrated essence of wis dom or statesmanship but we be llevo it is safer to bo honest nnd keep perfect faith with tho gieat masses of tho voters. Less mistakes will bo committed in tho long run, tho' af times donittgogory cieep Into politi cal platforms and Is onactcd Info law. Wo havo said this prelimi nary to all discussion of our county politics. Wo bellevo wo have a good ticket aud that it will bear the most rigid tests aud that tho best In terests of tho people will bo sub served by upholding tho republi can party In tho county, statu and nation.
