It wiw the first paper from tho oulnldo world to ronch Jefleruou, and wu Indeed a treat. . DuIunci tho post month the roughest weather linn been experi enced on tho Atlantic Ocean for years. Freight nnd passenger hhlpn liavo made tho voyago with the greatest dlfllculty. Many steamer nro ovorduo nt tho City of New York. The storm that has been raging for the past month, seems to have nearly onclroled tho world. Tiik Oregon Vindicator assails our urtlclo In favor of putting sugar on tho frco list, and says It Is not republican doctrine. A number ol leading and inllucntlal republican senators nro advocates of rcpenllng tho sugar duties. Hut wo are cer tain that the rank mid 11 lo of the re publican party nro In favor of a different system. Ho long as all sugar or nine- tenths of all of It Is Imported, nml only one stuto makes sugar In largo quantities, why keep on tho Urlll? JIOVK FOIt TIIK MltHMil:. Tjik regular scshIjii of the county court Is hold next mouth, What showlug will Balem and Marlon county mako for n bridgo at tlilh city? A city that pays one-third of tho county tnxes, atul whero the larger part of the county llnds Its market for surplus products, must not neglect to demand from the county court all that can bo done to secure tho early construction of a bridge. Wo nre not udvlsod how action will bo taken. A city and county commlttco should l raised at once to present this matter. Let It not rest with a few. What lu overy body'h bUBlucsH, Is hobody's. No doubt It Is primarily tho duty of the county court of Marion and Polk to tnko up tho bridgo nnd push It. Hut they must have something lie fore them. A petition should be laid before them signed by a majority of all the tax payers of e county. It should be based on good sound authority. Tho samo should be done In I'olk. That would authorise thu courts to do nil In their power. Tho petitions should ask imperatively that action bo taken at ouco tn thu full extent of tho powor vested lu tho county courts to restore this bridgo, That would represent the voleo of the pcoplo. No doubt overy farm In roach of Balom on either side of tho river will luso good money and bo diminished lu value if this bridgo Is not built. If not built In tlmo for all tliU season's business from tho farms to pas freely nnd uninterruptedly either wny It will operate ns a serious cheek upon tUu developeineiit of the city and both counties. It Is n cheek upon tho development of the whole community for many miles either wny to not havo this bridge, that wo cauuot attord. This 1ms no doubt, occurred to all. Hut we need to realize thu great force. uud strength of numbers mid uni ted and concerted action. Practi cally the Balem bridgo over the Willamette Is tho greatest loss the two counties have sustulned from thellood, It Isn low that must Ihj made good, at an early hour, or we, have not felt its fullest lmHrt. l,et tlicro Utuotlon, action, action. i ' - i i .i i. . . From letter to thellull, Iowa.Advnnccl Tho first plnce of Importance in Washington is Bpoknne Fnlls, whlch has not yet recovered from tho lire. It Is beautifully located on high pla teau, has un 'excellent water power, rind Ubofind to bo a good town. Hut like Its rivals on Puget Bound, Ta coma and Seattle, everything is boomed beyond reach. Each, of the-te cities havo had a phenomenal growth, the result of pressure bro't toibear by'specuUtorsnnd it -looks as though thcro must be a reaction somo day. As an inducement to come to Seattle nnd locate, one of Its leading real estate men told how a dry goods man thcro had just leased a store at $800.00 per month, or about (10,000 n year. That looks like u rather poor bait to throw out for suckers. Tocomn is the worst mudholo I over saw, yet lots of business Is dono there, as also at Seattle. Going south to Oregon, tho first Important place we reach s Portland, tho metropolis of the state, on the Wlllamete river, Bear the junction of the Columbia, but It Is n poor place to settle for buitiess without nn unlimited amount of capital. South of here for a hundred and fifty miles stretches tho famous Willamette valley. Tho river Is navigated by steamers, nnd the land is tho finest farming region In the state. Wheat is raised here which so far excels nnj' 1 ever saw In Iowa that I could hardly believe my eyes, so largo and plump nro the kernels. Thirty nnd forty bushels to thencre, is nn average crop, but then I don't want to make your readers discon tented with fair Iwa. Of fruits, they ralso tho finest pears, peaches, prunes, cherries and apples I have over seen. Tho greatest trouble with this country has been tho lack of activity by farmers, but since tho railroads nro running In here new blood has created a competition which Is bound to drive every Inter ail uhcad. Property is still compar atively cheap here. Salem is tho capital of tho slate, aud lies in tho center of this mag nificent valley. It Is a beautifully located city of 12,000 people, has nearly all tho stutc Institutions, a u good start in manufatures, a uni versity, colleges, schools and churches tho best in tho state. Dozens of people aro coming hero overy day, and the place Is rapidly growing. It Is almost Impossible to rent a houso to live In. Grout raIN road agitation is going on all along tho valley, and Salem Is bound to boa center of such trnllle. It Is safe to cstlmato that at Its present ratoof growth, ten years will seo Salem n city of GO.UOO. The climate Is excellent, business Is good and Its Krmniieiit resources aro of tho very best. A.
