They are continually HELLING OUT AT COST. How do tho keep up? Are they supported by charity, or aro they and their advertisements frauds? Hear th Salem is a prosperous and growing city, and all its merchants are doing well and making money, and any right-minded man knows that when a a merchant advertises to sell "at ce3t," that it is always at what it "costs tho buyer." Company mm DEATH IN A CYCLONE. St Louis Visited by a Destruc tive Wind Storm. GENERAL IN KANSAS AND MISSOURI liuildings Unroofed, .Houses Demolish ed and Much Suffering the Re sult of the Storm. At St. Louis yesterday afternoon a cyclone of great furystruck a largo section of the city and created sad havoc. For a width of eighty rods it cut its way through the densely populated part of tho city, leveling nearly everything in its track. As usual, in such cases, there was little reason to expect so severe a blast, and for this reason its work was all the more fatal. Many roofs were carried away, houses were shattered and contents creatly damaged. So far only about half a dozen are re ported killed and double that num ber injured. The storm also extend ed to East St. Louis and several Illi nois towns, but with the meagre news returns no fatalities are rt" ported. In Kansas the storm was perhaps the severest, having raged in nearly all parts of the state. There much snow has fallen drifting in some places twenty feet high. All com munication by rail is stopped, aud tho railroads are suffering much damage. A dispatch to tho Journal from Lincoln, Neb., states that reports received there are to the effect that a storm of great severity is raging throughout tho state. A peculiar feature of the storm is its occurauce on the anniversary of the terrible blizzard two years ago, when so many people perished from the cold. Reports of the present storm in dicate that it is no less severe than that of which It Is the anniversary. Even as far south as Memphis, Tcnu., aud in Mississippi the storm is reported as having been severe. There heavy rains were experienced instead of snow. Death of a Young Millionaire. San Fkancisco, Jan. 12. George Mar's, son of tho millionalr glass maker of Philadelphia, was found dead in his room at the Palace Ho tel yesterday. Maris and his com panion, Clillord Harris.arrived here December 26th on the ship Eliza beth which came from New York via Cape Horn. They had under taken a trip around the Horn to re cuperate from the effects of dr'nk. Both men were sons of weathly pa rents and were well supplied with money. Their intention was to re main in San Francisco a short time and then proceed on a pleasure tri to China. The sea voyage had done them great good. Not a drop of liquor was to be had aboard and ISO duys of absolute abstemiousness had brought back the flush of health to their cheeks and apparently made new men of them. The two frieuds took adjoining rooms at tho Palace Hotel on Saturday, December 28th The temptations offered ou every ha id became too stroug for Maris and his flriend, and on Now Year's evening they started out on a de bauch which they kept up nntil Wednesday night last, when Maris took to his bed. Fire Destroys the nigglst Alcohol Fac tory In tho World, Peoria, Jan. 12 Fire broke out this afternoon in the Monarch dis tillery, and before It could bo reached it burned, together with 100,000 gal lons of untaxed spirits. Tho totul loss is estimated at $750,000, covered by Insurance. The distillery made use of 10,000 bushels of corn per day. It cost $500,000 to bnild, and was the largest in the world. This is a busy season, and tho house will bo idle three or four months. Tho loss of business will be several thou- dollars. The company is as strong in peisonnel as it is large iu numbers. PURELY PERSONAL. Mrs. J. C. Smith is visiting friends at Jefferson. Geo. Burnett took the morning train for Portland. v. H. Fate, of Sublimity, was on our streets to-day. S. R. Roe, of Oregon City, spent Sunday iu the city. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Webb, ofSll verton, were in tho city over Sun day. C. A. Robert went to Portland this morning on business, and will return to-night. R. B. Duncan left for Southern Oregon last evening, and will bo absent two or thicc days. L. II. McMalion, of the great and only Wooduurii Independent, is in the city, in an official way. Mrs. J. O. Booth was called sud denly, last evening by telegram, from Waterloo Sprlugs, Linn couu ty,to tho bedside of her mother, who was reported very low. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Wagner, of Salem, have been spending a week or two with relatives hi Ashland, on their return home from California, left lust evening for a short visit with old neighbors on Wagner creek.
