WAS CANDIDATE FOIt ALDERMAN. Some of tlio Ups and Downs Experi enced by Dabbling in Politics Just For tlio Dear People. Well, what do you think?" quer ied Mr. Bowser, as he looked up to mo across tho snipper table one even in?. "You You huven'l been and bought another liorso. Mr. Jlowf-er?'' "Howe! Cnn't you think of any thing but horee? I suppose you'll throw that horse up to nio to your dying dny. Tt was all settled this afternoon. I am going to be nomi nated for aldermun of this ward." "Mr. Itowbcr, Is It posslblo that you aro going to let them lend you Into any sueh foolishness? T thought you had n more level head than tluit,.Iii spile of all your mistakes." "My mistake!" he shouted. I never made one in my life, except when I married you I Level head! T'd like to see some one who carries a more level head than 1 do." "And so you aro going to be alder man?" "Iff live." "Hut what for?" "Because it Is tlio wisli of tho peo ple. My country calls. The com mltteo has canvassed tlio ward, and concluded that I was not only tho best man for tho ofllce, but tho only one who stood any show against tho vicious opposition. Tt is a saciilleo on my part, but tho true patriot must bo ready to sacrifice." "I'm so sorry." "So sorry! For what? Because I havo been selected above all others! Because honors havo been thrust upon mel Mrs. Bowser, you havo never Appreciated tho man you married, and you probably never will." "Well, I shan't say any more. I think It la ti put-up job to get monoy out of you, and 1 know what a gang will be running hero after you. It'H your own all'alr, however. Don't blame mo if you get left." "There you go! Always opposed to mo. I can plainly see why snmo men never get along. If 1 had a wlfo like some I know of I'd havo been governor of tho state long ago. I'm goliifj to run, however, and ufter I'm elected you'll probably bejust mean enough to any you brought it about." I didn't say any more. As soon as ho left the house next morning I prepared for visitors and I was not disappointed. Ho was hardly out of sight before the bell rang, and I ojHjned tho door to 11 ml a dlrty looklnm fellow with his hat on his ear, who asked: "Is Bowser honieV" "No, sir." "Gets out pretty early, doesn't he?" Leuvo any money for me?" "No, sir." "Ho didn't, oh? Burty specimen of a candidate he is! Expects us to do all tho ligurln' for nuthln', does sition, and. he said it would be no use for his party to put up a man against me. Bowser stock is away up, hey? For a week I lived in a stata of miserable agitation. Every hour in the day a ward heeler rang tho bell, and, when he wasn1 1 rlnging,lt was some other man who wanted n sewer or some other contract. Ev ery evening the house was full of politicians laying plans and guz zling down my currant wine, and on three nights Mr. Bowser had to "go the round" of the ward and see the boys. On the last night I had to help him up stairs, and the tears rolled down his cheaks as he whimp ered: "rJhay, Mrs. Bowser, it just breaks my heart to sheo how 'er people love mo. Tiiey cry lor mc, anu auu l cry for zhem." This went on for a week, and then tho caucus was held to nominate. Mr. Bowser said he would go through by acclamation, but the boys would expect some sort of speech, 'not to say a keg of beer af terward, ho would have to be on hand. As soon as nominated there would bo no more heelers running after him and a nomination meant election by a large majority. I didn't say much, but I fe'.t pretty sure how it would come out. Along about C o'clock ho come home. Ho was running. He also breathed hard, and looked white. "What on earth is tho matter now?" I asked as he banged into the hall. "Q gone!" he gasped. "How gone?" "Gone up." "Mr. Bowser tell me what has happened. You act as If you had met a ghost and hud lost your sen ses." "I I didn't get the nom nomi nation!" he whispered his knees quaking so that he had to sit down on a chair. "Why didn't you?" "Becuiibo they concluded that Mr. Scott was tho more popular and the stronger man." "What! the cross-eyed loafer who was arrested only Inst week for whipping his wife?" "Y yes." We looked at each other for a long time without speaking. Then Isaid: "I thought the dear people loved you, Mr. Bowser1?" "Yes." "You were to be selected above all others and honors thrust upon you." "Yes." "Your country called upon you to down tho vlscious oppositlou. You wore tho patriot who was ready to KuufWlce himself." "Yes." "How much LnwjjrJJils experience co3t youi; "Four hundred." "Well, you havo made a fool of yourself, and! hope it will bo ales son to yon. You'd boter go to bed." "I I guess I will." At midnight ho woke up sat up in bod, and exclaimed: "Look here, old lady, 1 hopo you feel better, bavins accomplished your villlanious object!" "What do you mean?" "I mean that you defeated mo in tho cause. Everybodjvkuows you, and this opportunity for revenge could not bo passed oyer. Mrs. Bowsor, you havo gone a step too far! To-morrow I shall consult a lawyer about divorce proceedings." "Go to sleep," "Yes, I'll go to sleep; but don't imagine I shall forget or overlook your base duplicity. I havo borne and borne, but this Is the end." Next morning, however, ho made no reference to tho matter, and as some of his party made him believe that he had been withdrawn In the Interests of harmony, heeaino home one day to ebserve: "I hear that my name is being mentioned for mayor, but I shan't take tho nomination. 1 picfor to be a plain, humble citizen. Then they resemble neither the South American Indian nor the natives of the Australasian continent. There own theory is that the Great Spirit was fishing one time, and threw his line down from the sky to hook a whale. The hook stuck in the ground, and he pulled and pulled until he drew a muuii tain up to the skies, which is now called Eungariri. He Hew along the clouds in a rnge, and tried his luck GOO miles away with no better suc cess, for this time he brought up Mou'utEgmount, a peak 10,000 feet above tlio sea level. Both thct.es snow-capped peaks may be seen to this day by mariners far out at !ea as a proof of tho correct iiess of (he tradition.
