CJ uuu ., guiuu u, u B' .1- tnc- a.u u penitentiary noticed a strange look ing man In the yard, and knowing that something was wrong he or dered him to hault. But instead or doing as ordered ho run. Mr. Krichbaum then went to the prison ofllce and got tho night watchman's revolver and went to the strange form and ordered him to throw up his hands, which he did. He was then tuken to the ofllce and searched but nothing was found on him but a small whisky flask partly filled. After ho wus searched he was placed In a cell un til this morning when tho "stran ger" was brought to tho county Jail and was lodged there until a complaint could bo made. The appearance of a stranger in side the prison walls ut that tlmo of night caused quite a sensation, and Warden McKinnou for fear an at tempt wus being made for u whole sale delivery of prisoners, caused a thorough search all around the walks and over the buildings and shops, but hud ho known tho whole circumstances ho would have known i that there wus no danger. , now IT WAH. Ah soon as it wu.s made known in tho city this morning that u man i hud "attempted to bleak In the pen itentiary" a Jouiinai. leporter was sent to f-co that man, as It is always Just tho other wuy. The above fuels wero learned ut the penitentiary, mid tills evening ut.'i o'clock when a reporter called ut the county jail to see Mr. II. C. Johnson, of Hepp ner, who It was that caused the commotion ut tho penitentiary, the following facts wero learned: Mr. Johnson nrrlved In Portland yes terday on his way to Salem, from Heppncr. As ho had a few hours to wait for a train ho mot several friends aud In their company repaired to a saloon and imbibed pretty freely in tho "forbidden fruit," so much so, thut when ho arrived in Salem last evening ut 7:50 ho was so crazed with liquor that instead of coming up to tho city us ho Intended ho wandered out in tho neighbor hood of the jiciiltoutiury. When ho arrived ut tho penitentiary ho lin magiued that his wife was on the Inside of tho wall mid by some un imaginable, means managed to scale tho fence and when discovered by tho guard ho was on tho Inside of a 10 foot wall all safe and t-ound. Mr. Johnson Hays how ho got there ho does not know only that ho wus crazed with liquor as above stated. Mr. Johnson is a good citizen of Heppncr, aud is u gentleman well connected. A look at him will sat isfy anyone that no evil Intentions wero Intended by him, but ho wus simply overcome by tho power of liquor. Ho wus on his way hero to look after some business matters, and it is to bo regretted that ho has been tho victim of tho uiifortuiiute circumstances. The now stables are now completed mid the grand stand is being repaired and tho grounds re ceiving their final arrangement. Work has begun In fixing up tho grand pavilion and a number of stands aro now at tho grounds In running order. Among thoso that have stands aro Wm. Benson, Charles Henderson, S. L. Jones and Speight & Kouch mid two restaurants Louis Iteunlo and L. S. Winters, all of Salem. A bar room has been put In at tho race track by Adolph & An derson, and a number of other stands will bo lu running order by Monday. Miie race tracK is in excellent con dition and a largo number of hordes are already (hero and more aro ex pected to-day aud to-morrow. Tho company owns and controls the best placer mining grounds ever opened tin on the Pacific coast, and also some extra good quartz leads. Eighteen miles of toll road running from King's prairie, to tho mines, originally built at a cost ol $32,000, Iiqb been purchuK'd In the interest of the company. 2d. The company is organized on u basis wherein u small holder of stock has an equal showing with the larger, uud no one need have fear of being froze out on uccount of assessments, ns the stock is mude ab solutely paid up and absolutely non-as-tcssuhlo on the payment of $10 per Share. The par value of the stock is $50 p'jr share, but after a careful estimate it was decided that $10 per share would thoroughly open up the mines. .'id. The dnectorH are not ullowed to run the company In to debt beyond tho money on bund, mid stock holders ure not liable for company debts. HI). Parties holding stock with tho company have a preference over nil others lu getting employment with the company. The company is now building tho necessary buildings at Quurtz villo, uud expect to complete surveys this month, mid also commence work on tho road purchased in about ten days, bo that they can haul in the necessary machinery to operate the mines.
