0 mfi mnimii initnltll TUfijaniiUi mimL, jfVfH SATURDAY. AUGUST 10, 1859 Napoleon the Great. A little, while tigo I stood by the gravo of the old Napoleon a masj ulfleent tomb of gilt mid jrold, fit almost for ii deity -lei-d an.l gazed upon the fcarco;iti:igus u: r.ire and tinmclpsfl nmrlil'' ltnr r,.alsi nf Inof the awhert of that rtttlrs in.m. 1 leaned over the balustrade and thought about the career of the greatest soldlerof the modern world. I saw him walking upon the banks of the Sein contemplating suicide. I saw him at Toulon. I saw him putting down the mob in the streets of Paris. I saw him at the head of the army in Italy. I saw him cross ing the bridge at Lodi v 1th the tri color in his hand. I w.w him in Egypt in the shadows of the pyra mids. I saw him eoiHjiuv the Alps and mingle the eagles of France with the eagles of the era.'S. I saw him at Marengo at Ulm, and at Aus terlitz. I saw him in Russia when the infantry of the snow and the cavalry of the wild blast scattered his legions like winter's withered leaves. I saw him at lipsicin de feat and disaster driven by a mil Ion bayonets back upon 4 Paris clutched like a wild beast banished to Elba. I saw him escape and re take an empire by the force of his genius. I saw him upon the fright ful field at Waterloo, w here chance and fate combined to wreck the fortunes of their former King. And I saw him at St. Helena, with his hands crossed behind him, gazing out upon the sad and solemn sea. I thought of the orphans and widows he had made of the tears that had been shed for his glory, and of the only woman who ever loved him, pushed from his heart by the cold hand of ambition. And I said, 1 would rather nave been a French peasant and worn wooden shoes. I would rather have lived In a hut with a vine growing over the door, and the grapes growing purple in the amorous kisses ot the autumn sun. I would rather have been that poor peasant, with my loving wife by my side knitting as the day died out of the sky with my children upou my knees and their arms about me I would rather have been that man, and gone down to the tongue less silence of the dreamless dust, than to have been that imperial im personation of force and murder known as Napoleon the great. A little deacriptlvo p'ece entitled ''Over the Guns," rout the Detroit Free Preis, of which wo give a para graph, reminds ub that great adver tisers, like H. II. Warner & Co., tiro' prietors of Warner's celebrated cafe Cure, niiidit get a hint from it. Here is the paranrapli : "Shoot to the right or left, over the gnus or under them. Strike whoro you will, but strike to destroy. Now the hell surges down, even to the windows of tho old farm-house now back under tho apple trees and be yond them. Dead men aro under tho ponderous wheels of the guns, mad devils aro slashing and shooting across the barrels. No one seems to know friend from foe. Shoot, slash, kill and , , ,, "But the hell is dusolved. The 6moke Is lifting, shrieks and screams prow fainter, and twenty or thirty living men pull tho dead bodies away from the guns. Three hundred dead and wounded on tho single acre. They tell of war and glory. Look over this hell's acre and And tho lat ter." And in just as deadly a strife, though noiseless, aro men falling at ow right and left to-day. Is it war? Yes, war of the blood. Blood loaded with poison through imperfect kidney action. And is there no twwer to stop this awful slaughter Yes, Warner's Pafo Cure, a tried specific, a panacea that has brought life and hope to hundreds of thousands of dying men and women. County Judce. A FAMOUS BATTLE-GROUND. On the hanlts oi tho Tippecanoe, a small stream which enters tho Wa bash lliverin Indiana, was fought the terrific hattlo of Tippecanoe. In this crcat Btruifirle of frontier times, tho allied wostern Indians nn-- tier tlio chi"ftain8lnp ot tiikwatawa, tho "i'rophet" were defeated in No vember, 1811, by tho AinericatiH un der tho command of Gon. Wm. II. Harrison. It was a desper.ite, hard-fought battle, and much depended upon the result. Hud tho Indians been successful, all barriers of defence for the early settlers w uld havo been overthrown and the eadly tomahawk would havo been active in tho r.ipid extermina tion of tho remaining pioneers. On the othor hand tho fortunate termin ation of the contest put an ond to fur ther attempts at open w arfare by the IndiatiB. The rich territory, bo Ion; overrun by hostilo savages, was thrown open for settlement, which rapidly occurred as soon ns the news of tho great victory becuu. wide spread. Naturally groat praiso was rendored to the success antl intrepid braveiy of Gon. Harrison and ho was honored in many ways. Ho afterwards served as Commander of tho Army of the Northwest, and when Indiana was ad mitted to Ktatebood, houas !le''tod to represent the State in tho United States Senate. In 1B40 lie v. as elected President and his unfortunate dcmii-u occurred shortly after beirif inaugu rated. The forty-second anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe found the gal lant grand-son of "Old Tip" leading his forces to a great political victory which resulted in tho selection of Gen. Ben. Harrison a Pro.-ident of the United States. The Harrisons havo been a hardy race of men, sprung from old log cabin stock, which is a sufficient guarantee of its genuineness wherever found. Realizing the truth of this, groat effort has been made to re-discover some of the secrets contained in the old log cabin stock of useful articles, und as the result, the famous Old Log Cabin Sawaparilla, univer sally regarded as tho best Spring tonic and blood cleanter has been found. Not satisfied nith the world wide esteem which is held for War ner's Safe Cure, tho only euro for kidney diHeass, tint proprietor ia willing to do all llntt Ii possible to es tablish Warner's Iaz Cabin fcarsap arilla as foremost anions household articles on account of ha purity and effectiveness.
