There was another railway ne
cident thin morning which came
near proving falal, but which for
tunately terminated without Ions of
human life. ThcHCcneof the acci
dent was near tlie State fairgrounds,
where tiiu Sllverton road crosseH
the railroad track.
Tlie California overland pawenger
train wuh about an hour late this
morning and when at this crossing
they ran into tlie one hnrao wagon
of an old gentleman, James Tucker,
who wim coming to Salem from bin
, homo near Sllverton, to market a
few boxes of jilunis and pears.

the accident and report It as seen by
the only two eye witnesses to tlie
collision.

the horse and light wagon and
knocked them foity yards, when

of tlie wagon were scattered from
tho crossing to wheie tho wagon
was deposited, in a demolished con
dition, while tliero was not a string
of harness left attached to the horse,
which was killed outright. Mr.
Tucker, who win driving, was In
deed fortunate, escaping with noth
ing more than flesh wounds about
the head and face. He was tossed
high Into the air and struck tlie
ground not far from where the
wagtm fell. The horse landed
twenty-live feet to tlie right of the
track and the wagon an equal tfU
taneo to the iott. The waoii was
struck behind, on the light side, as
tho right hind wheel Is scattered
for many feetand shivered into hun
dreds of pleccH.

Miss Wllklns, who lives near the
fair grounds railway crossing, was
dangerously near when the accident
occurred. Sho was seen by a Joimi
NAIj reporter, nnd her,' is what she
bad to say:
"I was gnhi'jr down tho road to
ward the rail i ond track when I
heard the train coming. I saw the
old gentleman dilvlng tho gray
horse coming slowly along. I heaul
tho engine whistle and was afraid
that some accident would Happen, for
ho was driving so very slowly. 1 le
drove upon the track and it seemed
to mo was entirely across it, when
his horse shied and turned arotiud
as If to ro-cross tho track. The en
gine tooted several times but the
horse did not get oil' tliu track and
was struck by the engine. 1 am
pretty sure tho wheels were entirely
oil' tho track before tho horse shied
ami turned around. He drove so
slowly it seemed to mu that if I culd
have been thoro to grab tho horso by
tho bridle that I could have saved
them. Hut the horse and driver
and wagon wero gathered up and
knocked nearly llfty yards."
