In the names of these Islanders I could not find that they had any thing like a family iiamo, but only u single one, (corresponding to our christian names) iih is the case, I believe, throughout the Islands of the Iliclllc. I could not learn that tho names were significant either of animals or other objects, iih the Indians of America are, and I never found any two persons of the wiine name. The children do not ad dress their parents by jiny name corresponding to father or mother, pupa or mamma, but by their names. Their patents treat them on tlio footing of eiiiallty. They are generally well behaved, and are never puuMicd, except occasionally when Impatient for their food. A detail or all that befell us would serve only to give p.iin to the benevolent, or at most to show how much human beings can eudiiie. I shall attempt hut little more than to dlscrlbe thcsullellngs of a day. Strange iih It may nppoAr, It N nevertheless tine, that, notwithstanding they are in this miserable condition, with no prospect of Its over being improved, they are of the opinion that they me highly favored.
