I't'low Islanders.
I'llAITKIt VIII.
In the names of these Islanders I
could not find that they had any
thing like a family iiamo, but only u
single one, (corresponding to our
christian names) iih is the case, I
believe, throughout the Islands of
the Iliclllc. I could not learn that
tho names were significant either of
animals or other objects, iih the
Indians of America are, and I never
found any two persons of the wiine
name. The children do not ad
dress their parents by jiny name
corresponding to father or mother,
pupa or mamma, but by their
names. Their patents treat them
on tlio footing of eiiiallty. They
are generally well behaved, and are
never puuMicd, except occasionally
when Impatient for their food.
A detail or all that befell us
would serve only to give p.iin to the
benevolent, or at most to show how
much human beings can eudiiie. I
shall attempt hut little more than to
dlscrlbe thcsullellngs of a day. Ob
serving once for all, that for the
termor two long years we experi
enced the same privations, and
were subjected to the same brutal
ticatment; life during that time,
was no better than the constant
hiiccchhIoii of tlie most acute mif
fed ugs.
This island, unlike tho I'cIcwh, Is
one of the mostliorribleaud wretch
ed on the face of the globe. The
only product of Its soil worth men
tioning Is the cocoa tree, and those
aio of so dwiirllsh and miserable a
growth as to bear but very few nuts.
These few, however, constitute tho
food of the Inhabitants, with tho
except Ion of a sjieclcs of (Mi caught
occasionally near tho hIioio. The
only animals or creeping things
known on the island are lizards and
mice, and, dm lug our stay there,
scarcely a solitary sea-fowl was
known to have alighted on the Is
land, anil lint row IIhIi uuit taUuii
by the natives. The character of
the inhabitants much resembles that
ol the Island Itself. (,'owiiriljy and
servile, yet most barbarous and
cruel, tliey coinblne, In their habits,
tempers, and dispositions, the most
disgusting and loathsome features
that disgrace Immunity. Ami, what
may be regarded as remarkable, (lie
female portion of the Inhabitants
outstrip tiio men in cruelty and
savage depravity; so much so, that
we weie fieciuenlly Indebted to the
tender incrclesof the men for escapes
from death at the hands of the wo
men.
Tim indolence of the natives,
which not even the fear of starva
tion Itself can rouse to o.erllon,
prevents them undertaking the least
toil, although a little labor, well ap
plied, might lie made to render them
liillnltely nunc comfortable. Strange
iih It may nppoAr, It N nevertheless
tine, that, notwithstanding they are
in this miserable condition, with no
prospect of Its over being improved,
they are of the opinion that they
me highly favored. This can be ac
counted for in no other way than by
the fact, that they aroeutlrely Ignor
