This is without (jiiestlon one- of most dangerous enemies to which the apple tree is subjected. It has M.etirud a strong hold In the larger portion of the orchards in Western Oregon, and Is putting In an ap pearance cast of the Cascades, but llttloellbit has been made to exter minate it from any of the orchards infested. Tills is due to tho fact I bat hut. few know what it is and the dangcis that its picsenco brings in tlie orchaid. The woolly aphis is a small insect covered Willi a wnlte woolly siio stance, lieuee its name. Its color is a reddish brown, and when crushed It yields a red Juice. They Infest the apple trees in particular, both roots and branches. They live upon Hie sup of Hie bark and produce mall warts or granulations on it. They Increase with astonishing rapidity, and the wind carries them from one tree to another by the liht down in which they am en u nipped, and thus they spread quickly fiuiii one on-hard to all ot tier. Not a moment should bo liNt in destroying the first one that puts In an appearance. Tho billow ing remedy is taken from the i-ec-ictary's report, California state iioard of herticulture: "l-'otir pounds of rosin, three pounds ni" mi! soda, water to make four and one-half gallons; dissolve Hip sal soda in a few pints of water; whtui tboioughly dissolved add tho roslu; lieat until dissolved and add water dually. There are several varieties of these insects so like in Mppearancoand un like in habits that much confusion is occasioned in trying to distin guish between them. These cater pillars am seldom abundant for many years in succe-sion, for In times of great plenty their natural enemies multiply with great rapidi ty. Several parasites destroy them, and some of the iiiHrt-fcciling birds devour them greedily. Keinedlos Thoegg-eluslorsshould besought for and destroyed daring tho winter months. When the cat erpillars havu become half grown tho trees should be freipiently inspected early in the morning and the con gregated inas-cs destroyed by tiick ling a little kerosene oil over them. Trees can bo thoroughly cleaned of them by tho use of the London pur ple upray as used for the destruction of tho Collin moth, or three spoon fills of Oregarth's Insecticide dis-1 solved in a pallfull of water, and the trees sprayed with this solution. ' During tho day they am so constant - lyon theniovctliiitatieulhoroiighly demised from them In tho morning may be crowded again before night, so, to avoid this, lasten strips of cot- ton batting four Inches wide, about the trunk of the tree, by means of a string tied tight in the middle. We deslro to emphasize the fact that one hour spent in the orchard destroying the eggs or the young caterpillars when flint hatched, will accomplish mom than one day after they am largo enougl to scatter from tho homo nest.
