This is without (jiiestlon one- of
most dangerous enemies to which
the apple tree is subjected. It has
M.etirud a strong hold In the larger
portion of the orchards in Western
Oregon, and Is putting In an ap
pearance cast of the Cascades, but
llttloellbit has been made to exter
minate it from any of the orchards
infested. Tills is due to tho fact
I bat hut. few know what it is and
the dangcis that its picsenco brings
in tlie orchaid.
The woolly aphis is a small insect
covered Willi a wnlte woolly siio
stance, lieuee its name. Its color is
a reddish brown, and when crushed
It yields a red Juice. They Infest
the apple trees in particular, both
roots and branches. They live upon
Hie sup of Hie bark and produce
mall warts or granulations on it.
They Increase with astonishing
rapidity, and the wind carries them
from one tree to another by the
liht down in which they am en
u nipped, and thus they spread
quickly fiuiii one on-hard to all
ot tier. Not a moment should bo
liNt in destroying the first one that
puts In an appearance. Tho billow
ing remedy is taken from the i-ec-ictary's
report, California state
iioard of herticulture:
"l-'otir pounds of rosin, three
pounds ni" mi! soda, water to make
four and one-half gallons; dissolve
Hip sal soda in a few pints of water;

roslu; lieat until dissolved and add

Use the following day, one pound
to the gallon ot water. Apply
warm.

Twenty-live iioiinds of lime (un
sluckcd); twenty pounds of sulphur!
fifteen pounds of salt; sixty gallons
of water. To mix the above, take
ten pounds of lime, twenty pounds
of sulphur, and twenty gallons of
water. Jloil until the water is thor
oughly dissolved. Take the remain
derfifteen pounds of lime and fif
teen pounds of salt- slack, and add
enough water make the whole
sixty gallons. .Strain and spray on
the trees milk warm or warmer.
This can be applied when tho foliage
is ofl'tho tree, and will have no in.
Jurious ellect on the fruit buds or
tree whatever.

There are several varieties of these
insects so like in Mppearancoand un
like in habits that much confusion
is occasioned in trying to distin
guish between them. These cater
pillars am seldom abundant for
many years in succe-sion, for In
times of great plenty their natural
enemies multiply with great rapidi
ty. Several parasites destroy them,
and some of the iiiHrt-fcciling birds
devour them greedily.

besought for and destroyed daring
tho winter months. When the cat
erpillars havu become half grown tho
trees should be freipiently inspected
early in the morning and the con
gregated inas-cs destroyed by tiick
ling a little kerosene oil over them.
Trees can bo thoroughly cleaned of
them by tho use of the London pur
ple upray as used for the destruction
of tho Collin moth, or three spoon
fills of Oregarth's Insecticide dis-1
solved in a pallfull of water, and the
trees sprayed with this solution.
