The largest locomotive engine ever constructed, prior to 1880, was that made at Jbe Ualdwin locomotive works during the early part of 1879. It was turned out ready for use April the 10th that year and nomad "Un cle Dick." Uncle Dick weighed 130,000 pounds; -was CO feet from headlight to the roar of tluT tender. he is now at woik on the Atchison, Topcka & Santo Fe road. As before stated "Uncle Dick was the most powerful locomotive in the world prior to 1880. During the year 1883 the same works that con structed Uncle Dick turned out sev eral locomotives for the Northern Pacific llallroad.'each weighing 180, 000 pounds. During the s.itno yearas if ta over shadow the Baldwin works, the Central Pacific Company caused to be built at their shop! in Sacramen to, Cal., what aie leijlly the largest locomotovcdin the world. They have eight drive-wheels each, the cylin ders are 19 inches in diameter and the strokes three feet. These engines weigh, exclusive of leader, 123,0J0 pounds, and with tender as Uncle Dick's weight was given, they weigh almost 190,000 pound", said to be about 23 tons above Baldwin's best efforts.
