Douson, a pioneer coal operator of Lehigh, Pa., died lately, worth six miliou dollars. Tho oldest Odd Fellow in tho United States is living right hero in Salem an elderly gentleman who may be seen walking along Commer cial daily. Ho was introduced to a Capital Jouhnal-ist by a Fellow of the Odds, as Mr. Armstrong, the oldest Odd Follow in tho United States and so recognized at Portland during tho great celebration held thero lately. "Well," I admire a member of the I. O. O. F.," said tho reporter, "bo causo in this world of humbug and Insincerity it means business." "Yes, quickly responded tho vet eran, "that is just tho truth." Said a bystander, "I havo known tho children of good Odd Fellows who had died, to bo taken in hand by lodges in poor little country vil lages and bo brought up respectably as industrious citizens. I mean children of Odd Follows in good standing. You can't say that of many orders?" "No," roplled tho old gentlemen with a bright smile, his eyes spark ling, "and you can't say it of any church." "However that Is not church busi ness," replied tho reporter, and to avoid discussion took his departure, leaving Father Armstrong and the bystander to talk it out.
