Hope fully, the commodity meet ings scheduled this season will contain some new ideas, some results of last year's research and field experience and a few reminders of some tried and true practices which need wider application. Con siderable thought, effort and expense goes into making the meetings worthwhile educa tional experiences and the new ideas picked up as spin-off from visiting with neighbors and peers is the frosting on the cake. The effort and expense is wasted, however, to the extent that growers don't make the effort to attend. In today's world, the successful businessman (aren’t all farmers businessmen?) is the one who makes use of all the tools available to him—and education is one of these tools. Following is a list of meetings scheduled for the next couple of months which will offer some new ideas, some re-emphasis on some old ideas and an opportunity to get up to date on problems and opportunities facing your industry. Show, Boise February 1 - Malheur Onion Growers February 4 - Wheat Gro wers Seminars Winter season is also the time when farmers get sales pitches for "miracle” ferti lizers, ''miracle” pesticides, and a host of other products which, when applied to seeds, plants or soil purport to do wonderful things. Often these "pitches" come via long distance phone or traveling salesmen with deals made through the mails and materials shipped in. Prices quoted are "unbelievable" but they don’t tell all the story. In the vast majority of cases, the local farm supply dealers are the best and cheapest (in the long run) sources of needed pesticides, fertilizers, and other supplies They'll sell you what you need and they'll be around to back up the product. Farmers who receive sales pitches for products which sound too good to be true should check out the products offered with their local dealer or county agent before they succumb to the temptation to “try a barrel.” • « • Did you ever notice that in a feeder cattle auction those cattle with horns still on, sell for less money than those dehorned cattle of the same quality. This should be impetus enough for each of us to be sure to dehorn all feeder cattle early enough for the heads to heal before selling. At the same time you're tigged up to dehorn - check those steer calves for stags and take care of them, it all means more money in your pocket. a a a As we go into the winter with our cow herd and prepare for culling in the spring we sometimes tend to delay checking on some essentials for the next breed ing season. One of those essentials is how adequate the supply of phosphorus is to the cows ration. There is plenty of current research that proves that a cow deficient in phosphorus in her diet will not cycle properly during breeding season. So if you have any doubts, better supplement those cows with a phosphorus supplement to take care of this potential problem. Good alfalfa hay is usually pretty well balanced with essential minerals but some of the other feeds can be low in phosphorus and cause prob lems. A mature cow weighing 1,000 lbs. should have 12 grams phosphorus per day.
