Thursday, June 10, 1976 Nyssa Gate City Journal, Nyssa, Oregon OUT OF THE PAST 10 YEARS AGO Miss Shirlee Seward was granted a bachelor of arts degree during commence ment exercises held Monday evening at Northwest Naza- rene College in Nampa. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Seward of Route 2, Parma. • a a “A very professional per formance” was the judge's comment when Miss Susan Schenk completed her senior piano audition Saturday eve ning at John Day. She also received a critic rating which is equal to 98 percent or above. After 10 years of auditions, a student does a senior audition. Fifteen memorized pieces are re- quired including a full Sonata, Bach Fuga and Prelude. Miss Schenk is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Schenk. The misses Carol Gilbert and Judy Garrel were selected as princesses. MYEARS AGO Lloyd A. Wilson of Nyssa. »on of Mr. and Mr». E.C. June 2 a joint installation of officers of the Nyssa Eagles Lodge and Auxiliary was held at the lodge hall. Officers of the Eagles Lodge are, Eddie — Taylor, Duane Holcomb, Ed Mason. Bob Thompson, Elmer Jaques. Don Harron, Bill Hamilton. Bob Toomb, Dale Garrison, Earl Bingham. E.H. Grand! and Carl Bar clay. Linville who is in the Caldwell hospital is a little improved at this time but is in intensive care. Mrs. Leonard Schutte spent 2 days in Nampa with her daughter Barbara last week. Friday evening, Mrs. Leo nard Schutte went to a bridal shower for her daughter Barbara at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Schutte near Nampa. The children of Mr. and Mr» Howard Schutte were Saturday evening guest» of their grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Schutte. Sun day they all had a picnic at the Lincoln Park in Nampa. Mrs. LeRoy Sprague ac companied by her aunt. Mrs. Gladys Rice of Boise spent 10 days visiting relatives and friends in Dodge City, Kansas. They had had some rain. The wheat was thin due to the early winds. They had some HO degrees tempera ture. They visited Mrs. Sprague's brother. Mr and Mrs. Max Jones and an aunt and uncle. Mr. and Mrs. PH Jones, and attended a family reunion on Memorial Day in Dodge City. The relatives came from other states. Mrs. Sprague attend ed a reunion of her high school class, at Ford. Kan sas. They went ot Kansas with Mrs. Sprague’s brother and wife of Emmett and flew home last Friday. Mrs. Jeanie Fenn and girls of Ontario were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Carl Fenn. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fenn of Portland were last week end guests of his mother. Mrs. Carl Fenn. Mrs. Jack Ernest of La- Grande came Wednesday to visit her parents. Mr. and Mrs. RD. McKinley and returned home Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Pratt, Carolyn and David were guests at a Sunday barbecue at the home of Mary and Jenie Rose. Shelia Pratt who attends college at the University of Oregon at Eugene was home for the weekend. HELLO WORLD! Mr. and Mrs. Randall M. Riggs of Salt Lake City. Utah are the proud parents of a baby boy, Micah Adam, born May 21. 1976 at 4:59 a m. The baby weighed eight pounds, six-ounces, and measured 21 inches long. He joins a brother, Matthew and sister Melannie. Mrs. Riggs is the former LcAnne Wilson of Nyssa. LeAnne is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Wilson. Maternal great- grandparent is Mrs. Alice L. Wilson of Nyssa. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Elvin L. Riggs of Salt Lake City, Utah. Paternal great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Judd of Salt Lake City. Utah. FIRE CALLS! Nyssa Volunteer Firemen were summoned to a mobile home fire at Fischer's Mobile Home Park west of Nyssa Tuesday evening. Extensive damage was done inside the home belonging to Brad Talbot. Mrs. Greg Topliff and Kelly of Boise spent Thurs day and Friday with Greg’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Topliff. Mrs. Irvin Topliff went to Parma Memorial Day where she visited relatives. Mrs. W.C. Nan Dewater and son Kent of Caldwell were Friday dinner guests of Mrs. Dale Witt. Mrs. Dale Witt called on Mrs. L.C. McDermott Thurs day afternoon. Mrs. Marge Ervin called on Mrs Dale Witt Thursday evening. Ross Mills went to Boise Friday, May 28 and visited his cousins. Mr. and Mrs. Gladwin Mills and family. They celebrated his birthday there Saturday. May 29 and took him to the car races at Meridian that evening. While there Ross helped Gladwin put new leaves in the springs of his pickup. He returned home Wednesday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Anderson of Phoenix. Ari zona were Monday guests of Mrs. Grankie Warden. Mrs. Merrill Call. Tam and Angie and Tina Smith went to Kaysville. Utah last Monday where they attended a wedding. They returned home on Thursday and were accompanied home by Mrs. Call's mother. Mrs Julia Webster who is spending 10 days in the Call home. Mrs W. C. Van DeWater and son Kent of Caldwell were Wednesday visitors of Mrs. Dale Witt. Kent had attended Special Olympics at Moscow, Idaho May 21 and 22 with the Caldwell group and participated in the bowling events. He and three members of his team each came home with a silver medal. History Group Meets Tonight A special meeting of the Malheur County Historical Society has been called by Chris Moore, president, for Thursday, (tonight) June 10 beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the Weese Building at Treasure Valley Community College. Among items of business will be a discussion and final plans for the historical tour in conjunction with the Top-Op agricultural event to take place in Jordan Valley on June 19th. Other business will include final prepara tions for the Captain Jona than Keeny Pass dedication to take place on July 4th on Lytle Boulevard and plans for the summer excursions spon sored by the society. This is the last meeting of the year and members as well as interested individuals are urged to attend. The entire Snake River Valley section in eastern Oregon and western Idaho was visited by a heavy hail storm Sunday that did considerable damage in spots. The hail was not general, some portions es- caping entirely, while others were peppered with hail stones ranging in size up to the size of small marbles. • • 60 YEARS AGO 50 YEARS AGO An event of considerable interest in business circles and to the community at large was the moving of Wilson Bros, into their new store building and the ad dition of several new depart ments to their business. Nyssa now has a full fledged up-to-date department store and the trading facilities of the town are largely in creased. A most favorable report on the operation of the old Rainbow mine in Mormon Basin district is received in Baker and gives assurance that property is being put in shape to again become the big gold producer that it was a few years ago. Tyler Felton of Arco. Idaho was elected president. His vice president is Mark Gangewer of Coquille. Ore gon. Marianne Nichols of Ontario will be the secretary, and Lisa Spears of Vale, the business manager. Christine Wilson of Payette was chosen publicity director. These officers will take over their duties at the close of the current college term. 40 YEARS AGO are being made that are very encouraging The Rainbow will wxm again be in the producing class.
