Page Four JOB'S DAUGHTERS ACTIVITIES Job's Daughters held a card party Monday, April 5 at the Masonic Hall. Bridge prizes went to Myrtle Sasser •nd Marion Strom. Pinochle prizes went to Louise Wer nick and Anna Marvstica. Elsie Diven was winner of the door prize. BRIDGE ACTIVITIES IONA FUNDERS IS SEMI-RETIRING after 21 clerking at Wilson Brothers Department Store. Long Time Employee Retires After 21 Years Service One doesn't think about Wilson's Department Store without bringing to mind a mental picture of a pert, petite, and ever so helpful lady by the name of Mrs. J. Elwood Flinders or Iona, as she is known to her friends. Iona is semi-retiring from the store, after twenty-one and one-half years of service, mostly in the Ladies Ready to Wear Department. She be gan clerking when the department was located on the mezzanine upstairs, later this was enlarged and more space added to the front part of the stairs. This was carpeted and the upstairs was appropriately named "The Style Shoo.” She then applied her clever way with words to write a weekly column for the Nyssa Gate City Journal entitled "Of Interest to the Fair Sex.” an advertising space which told of new arrivals in the department each week. It had hints, unusual happenings around town, sayings, and was spiced with her own unmistakable humor. Bob Wilson sponsored a contest one year to check the areas where the column was read, and the store received letters from many distant Thursday, April 8. 1976 Nyssa Gate City Journal, Nyssa, Orcqon places with the prize going to Mrs. John Mittlestead of Bayard. Oregon She says, “I've had the finest boss that anyone could ever have and I think Bob Wilson is tops." "Since moving the depart ment downstairs we have had one of the finest ready-to- wear shops in the whole valley and people come from Boise, Weiser and Vale to shop.” remarks Iona. The department, now un der the direction of Dick and Judy Martin, is being made more beautiful and more appealing to teenagers as well as Milady shoppers and includes a very nice baby and childrens department. Iona remarks that. "Dick is a great person to work for and has a good personality.” She will continue to serve the many friends she has made through the years and will also alter and mend and fix as needed. "I truly love to sell and meet the public." says this dynamic bundle of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Wilson entertained members of the Mr. and Mrs. Bridge Club at their home Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. George Sallee were guests for the evening. This club keeps a running score. • • • The Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club was entertained at the home of Mrs. Wilton Jackson last week. High honors went to Mrs. Bob Wilson and Mrs. Gene Stunz was second high. energy. "1 have enjoyed the association of the many personnel that 1 have been privileged to work with these many years." "All in all. it has been a great experience and there has been many, many chan ges in styles, fabrics and trends. It will be interesting to note new changes as they come along." Iona Flinders has always been a busy person, raising her family, working, being active in church and civic affairs. She has written and given many original readings at weddings and other functions in the area. When asked if she was planning on taking life easy, she smiled her beautiful smile and said. "I plan on having a little more time with my family and I would love to travel, if my husband would go with me." Whatever she does. Iona Flinders will do it well, and enjoy doing it and win continue to bring pleasure to those around her. just as she has brought much pleasure to the many friends she has met through the years while doing her job at Wilson's Department Store. Sharia Forerer. a student in that room partici pated in the program. The interesting program shared parts of our 200 years of history. The nut cups were decorated like blue hats and accented the red punch. The table centerpiece was flags •nd there were two beautiful cakes decorated to look like flags. Mrs. Roma Alvord baked and decorated them. Sunday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. The occasion was in honor of Garry Bybee'» birthday. • • • Mr. and Mrs. Shorty Brandt celebrated their 41 wedding anniversary Satur day evening with friends. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tanner. Bybee, attended a Bicemen Mat hen * v Han • • • Mr. and Mrs. John Mullins returned Sunday after a two week vacation. They went to Portland, where they enjoyed fishing for smelt in the Sandy River. They then journeyed to Lebanon and visited Mr. and Mrs. Ken Toomb and family. While there they attended a talent show with their grandson. Kelly, who took part in a singing group called the Creshendoa A VISITATION OF GRAND MASTER Grand Lodge of A.F A A. M. of Oregon Moat Worshipful Frank Coumont. Grand Master of Masons in Oregon will make an official visitation to District #9, on April 10. A no host dinner will be held at Starlite Cafe. Vale. Oregon at 6;3O p.m. The Vale Masonic Lodge will host the Tyled Meeting at 8 p.m. ÄOf/i Birthday Lynn Matheny, long time resident of Nyssa, celebrated his 80th birthday Thursday, April 1, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. •nd Mrs. Gene Pierce and family. Mr. Matheny has lived in Nyssa, since his arrival from Montana in 192b He sheared sheep and trapped for many years. He shared his birthday cake with his grandchildren •nd friends who called on him that afternoon. ORDER OF EASTERN STAR Golden Rule Chapter *131, OES, met Monday. April 5 at the Masonic Hall with Cleta de Boer, worthy matron, presiding. Clarence Wernick. worthy patron, presided for good of the order. Reporting on visit to Weiser Loyalty Chapter #19, for 75th Anni versary was Amelia Pratt. Star Chapter #69 prefor med a drill all in Centennial dress. Hostesses were Foy and Myrtle Sasser and John and Wilma Strick- Ian. Nest meeting will be April 19. The first meeting in May will be a potluck to honor Job's Daughters and De Molav. The couple will be married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Thursday. April 29. An open house will be held in their honor the first of May at the home of the groom's parents in Nyssa. A reception will also be held in Spokane. May 8. The couple will reside in Provo. Utah and attend Brigham Young University until graduation in August. The bride will be graduating in Child Development and the groom in Chemical Engineering. Following graduation, they will move to Boston. Massachusetts, where he will continue his studies at Massachusetts Insitute of Technology. Terese was graduated from Rogers High School in Spokane Scott was graduated from Nyssa High School. Poliyanna ('tub The Pollyanna Club met Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Betty White in King- man Kolony. Mrs. Evelyn Thompson was co-hostess. Twelve ladies were present. Mrs. Elsie Gehrke, president presided at the meeting Mrs. Linda Conant gave the secretary and treasurers re ports. Mrs. Jill Conant will collect for the Cancer fund in Kingman Kolony.
