Mr and Mr* Virgil Krause and other relative*. He recently completed 11 weeks of basic training at the San Diego Naval Center and will leave April 5 to report to the Great Lake* Naval Training Hase for week* of schooling a* a gunner's mate t echic ian. 20 YEARS AGO Mi»» Nannetta Bybee, daughter of Mr and Mrs. D O. Bybee of Nyssa war chosen as one of the singer* from among 500 applicants to *mg with the famed Brigham Young University capella choir She is now touring with the choir appearing on television and radio broad cast* al Idaho Fall*. Hillings •nd other western cities. Miss Bvbce is an honor graduate of Nyssa High School and i* now a junior al BYU in Provo. Utah • • • The annual cancer crusade of the American Cancer Society will gel underway Sunday and continue through April. In Malheur county, the crusade will be headed by Mrs John Broad of Nyssa. 30 YEARS MM A variety of entertainment numbers centering about the theme "Roses of Picardy” were presented at the annual Cinderella Hall sponsored by the Girls League of Nyssa High School in the gym nasium last Friday night. Olean Wells crowned the junior Cinderella. Kave Ham mon and the junior prince Philip Tucker and Cinderella Marie Seburn and Prince Tom Moore. Members of the junior court were: Nancy Ross. Larry Dimmick, Adrienne Peterson and Bob Church. I 1 40 YEARS AGO MAID O' CLOVER Frank Leuck, pioneer black smith of Nyssa passed away Saturday after a lingering illness. Frank Leuck was bom May 12, 1871 near Harper. Iowa, the son of Nicholas Leuck and Anna Fosch Leuck. For the first 17 years of his life, his home was in Iowa with his folks and then he accompanied them when they moved to Wayne County. Nebraska. It was while in Nebraska he took up black smithing and served his apprenticeship. He was mar ried on May 5, 1903 to Wilhelmina Muth at Wayne. Nebraska In 1911 the family moved to Nyssa where he operated a blacksmith for many years and also did some farming 50 YEARS AGO The oiling of the Old Oregon Trial from The Dalles to Ontario will be underway nest week if the weather permits, according to Mr Duby, highway engineer of Baker It is planned to commence the work on the 20 mile stretch at Arlington which was not oiled last year, and also to start another oiling crew at Ontario. • • • C. J. Flemming, the prominent Arcadia farmer, is the proud possessor of a new Ford. He made hi* first trip to Nyssa in the new machine Sunday. • • a Dr. Sarazin and Prof. Nedry went Io Boise Saturday and took in all the sights of the metropolis, including the Salvation Army. • • • Edwin Wilson of Big Bend was in Nyssa recently and added his name to the Journal's growing list of subscribers. a • • Many good citizens heeded the advice of the hint of the City Council and cleared up their vards this week. a a a J. Bovdell. manager of the Cozy Theatre, is arranging to put on another good serial soon. I won a prize bicycle Saturday for selling subscrip tions to the Gate City Journal.
