They are from left Lance Holcomb. Matt Stringer and Eddie Tensen. Also on the team but not pictured was Richard Eehlman. BROTHERS one-family track team back in 1958 under Coach Kinsey Keveren. This 880 -yard relay team consists of Glenn. Don. Frank and Dave, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Don Walker. Each of the boys were sprinters, and Glenn was clocked at 9.8 in the 100 yard dash. Don STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONS Chris Lords I4H. Coach Mel Calhoun and Sam Hartley. 106. They earned their titles at the State Wrestling Tournament at Corvallis last weekend. Sam was champion at 98 pounds Ills sophomore year, took second last year at 106 pounds, and then 106 pound champion his senior year. Chris won Fifth place last year at 14M 9.9. and Frank 10 flat. Freshman Dave was a half-miler. Glenn is now Nyssa High School Track Coach busily preparing for the 1975 season. He hopes to have as good a team as the one he and his brothers were part of almost 20 years ago. Bulldogs Take Fifth In State, Nyssa Ends Season With 7-7 Record In Greater Oregon League By Pat Marcum The Nyssa Bulldogs com pleted their 1974-75 Basket ball season on the road last weekend when they traveled to Madras and Prineville, losing at Madras Friday by 90—85 and ending on a winning note with Crook County. Saturdav night. (X>— 54. Friday’s game started with the trading of baskets, then Madras got the advantage by making three fast baskets and a free throw and led 9 to 3, but the Bulldogs came back and tied the game up at 17 all at the buzzer. The second quarter was a continuation of the first with the game tied up four more times but Nyssa started to pull away but Madras came right back. Bill Marcum scored three fast baskets at the close of the first half and Nyssa led by one slim point at halftime 40 to 39. After half time Nyssa came out still Fired up and Bill Marcum and Mark Marquez both scored five Field goals apiece to bring the third quarter to an end with Nyssa leading by 7 points. 67 to 60. The fourth quarter was still blistery basketball with Mad ras scoring three fast baskets and a free throw and tied the game at 73 all. The Final margin was the free throws as Madras made 12 free throws and only missed one while Nyssa made 10 and missed 5. But Mark Marquez was fouled out of the bailgame with more than five minutes to play in the ball game and he had scored 26 points. Bill Marcum was high pounds, and is now I4M pound champion his senior year. The two will wrestle this weekend at the Idaho State Free Style Tournament in Boise. Monday. March 17. they will wrestle in the Oregon State Free Style Tournament at South Umpqua Community College. Then on March 27. 2H and 29 they will enter competition in the USWF Western Division National Championship in Fresno. California. Bulldogs Win Saturday The Bulldogs ended their season Saturday night at Prineville against the Crook County Cowboys, and this was also the last high school game for three seniors who started the game. They were Cruz Martinez. Ray mond Wiley and Ted Joyce, and all did a Fine job. This game was an easier one (especially on the nerves) than Friday nights, but was still a hard-fought contest. In the first quarter, the Bulldogs jumped ahead 15 to 6 and were never behind in the ballgame. The second quarter was a basket for basket quarter with both teams scoring 15 SARA MARCl'M, LEFT, WAS SENIOR doubles winner and junior a scratch all events winner and Shelly Mvrick was senior doubles winner in the Junior Bowling Tournament held at the Sugar Bowl recently. points each with Nyssa holding their 9 point advan tage at halftime 30 to 21. The third quarter was more of the same with each team scoring 18 [joints each to end the period with Nyssa still leading 48 to 39. The fourth quarter Nyssa outscored the Cowboys 18 points to 15 points and they led by 12 at the Final buzzer of the 1974-75 Season. The Bulldogs completed their Greater Oregon League with a 7 to 7 record with a 10-12 overall record. District 7AA proved them selves to be real champs as they brought home five individual champions from the Class AA State Wrestling Tournament at Corvallis over the weekend. The Five top grapplers in the winning limelight (after many hours of practice and a full season of matches and lots of hard work) were Charlie Bowman of Crook County at 123 pounds; Chuck Pease of Mac Hi at 178 pounds; Schillinger the Burns heavyweight; Sam Hartley a Nyssa Senior who wrestles at 106 pounds and Chris Lords also a Nyssa Senior at 148 pounds. Crook County took the state title with 47.5 points followed by Eagle Point with 44 points. Phoenix had 43. Central 36 and Nyssa came in Fifth with 33.5. Sam Hanley, who weighs in at 106 pounds, seems to have made “winning" the only way to go when he approaches his opponent. He ended a tremendous season with a 28-0 record and took his winning ways on into the tournament to capture First place in his weight division. to win because win he did. by a score of 14 8 In his first round he decisioned Terry Gerding of Philomath 12-1 and went on in the second to top Kelly Clifford of Clatskanie 12 0. In the semi-finals he faced Tom Becker of Sutherlin, and won by a decision of 2 0. He won his title match against Dale l.undbom of Oakridge by a score of 5-3. David Ballou. 136 pounds was a last minute entry, when the man ahead of him in district couldn't participate in the stale competition thus making David eligible to participate. He decisioned Ken Northcutt of Creswell by 7-2 and then lost to Hill Howers of Central 9 2. Going into the First round consola tion bouts he won by a default from Jav Osburn of Douglas as the result of an injury by his opponent who illegally slammed him to the mat He was then forced to sit oui the concluding ses sions of the tournament Nyssa's Joe Joyce won his first round against Robert Wise of Rainier 9 ’ He lost his second to Dennis Fulpz of Coquille by a 6 4 decision In the first round consolation bout he was pinned in the third by _ Rav Co» of North Marion. In the 178 |M>und division David Mitchell lost his First round match to Dave Kochi of Tillamook by a score of 8-2. Chris Lords at 148 pounds also proved to be a real winner by taking his first opponent. Lye Haworth of North Marion 7-6. His second opponent wav Mike Serrv of Philomath and Chris took this match 15-0. Going into the semi Finals he was pilled against Brian Johnson of Gladstone and decisioned him 5-1. Chris' championship match found him face to face with Crook County's Jim McPhetridge who had dealt him (22-2-1) one of his only two losses this season in the district Finals, a 5 4 decision. Apparently this loss only made Chris more determined Burglaries Solved Two juveniles were taken into custody in Nyssa and charged with burglanes of the Muir-Roberts building on January 24 and 25 and the Ideal Gas Company office here. In both buildings cases of soft drinks were taken. Nyssa Police arrested the two youths following a Five-week investigation. The youths were released to their parents and the cases turned over to the juvenile courts.
