¥ ADRIAN NEWS s MR. AND MRS. DAMON SAVAGE will be honored with an open house on the occasion of their 57th wedding anniversary Sunday, September 16, 2.30 p.m. to 5.00p.m. at the Mark Hartley residence in rural Nyssa. In attendance and assisting with the arrangements will be all of their seven children, John Savage of Lakewood, California, Mrs. Verne (Laura) Chadwick of Covina, California; James. David, Donald and Dennis Savage and Mrs. Mark (June) Hartley, all of this area and their families. Friends and neighbors are invited to attend, and the honorees request no gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Savage were united in marriage September 14, 1916 at Twin Falls, Idaho. They were among the pioneers of the Owyhee Irrigation District. They moved to Nyssa- from Bly, Oregon in 1937 and cleared the sagebrush from their first farm under the project. Their posterity includes 25 living grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, many of whom will be in attendance. Charles Bowers Celebrates 90th Charles Bowers celebrated his 90th birthday, August 31, 1973. Charles was born in Missouri, in the Springfield area in 1883. He grew up there. Much of his early life was spent in the manner of the early pioneers. There was a large family, so be bad many cousins, nephews, aunts and uncles close by. He roamed the woods with his dogs, hunting, fishing, trapping ani mals tor their fur and for meat for the table. Later on he had a rifle and shotgun. He be came an expert shot with both. There was fox hunting, with the dogs at night, card playing, moonshine and fiddle playing. Charlie learned the tunes and played for dances all his life till coming to Oregon. He married young and left Missouri for the farming lands of Central Nebraska. There his “way of life,” continued, altho a successful farmer. There were young rabbits, squirrel, prairie chicken and pheasant for the table with once in a while a deer. There were plenty at other meat, but wild game tasted better. His wife died in 1933. His five children were grown. He married a young widow with six boys. It was the depth of the depression and drouth. Gradually, everything went, livestock, food and property. In 1938, he again ventured west, this time to Oregon. He brought his little family out and set to work making a living with his bare hands and a hoe. As he became acquainted, life became easier, his second family of five in school, his stepsons off to the war. But there was no time or inclina tion for the life of a fiddle player-gradually the tunes slip ped away. He worked in the sugar fac tory till be was 72-each fall his age recorded 65. He is still active-cutting weeds and keeping his little place on the Owyhee neat and trim. The river still runs by, but be picks up his fishing pole and lays it down again. It’s too far to the river.
