In addition to this, she is responsible for 32 LPN’s and Aides. In fact, the Direc tor of Nurses is responsible for 44 of the hospital's 69 part and full-time employees. The director is the person who has assumed the responsibilities for the smooth functioning of each phase of nursing service in the hospital and the Skilled Nursing Facility. The Administrator is her su perior and tie holds tier res ponsible and accountable for the quality of nursing service and the upholding of the hospital policies, yet keeping the costs to the patient at a minimum. While nursing service is the most important responsibility, many subdivisions are neces sary to keep it up to date. This includes interviewing pros pective employees, nurses, LPN’s and aides, discussing new drugs and up to date equipment with sales representatives; checking faulty equipment in need of repair or replacement; and planning training programs and in-service education of nur sing service. She keeps abreast with the working schedule for professional coverage of each 24 -hour period, 365 days a year. With sickness of employees, holidays and vacations, this alone is almost a full-time po sition. She is also a mediator, con sultant and co-ordinator for the departments within the hos pital and between the medical staff and the personnel. There are continued advance ments being made in the nur sing service each year. It is to the public's interest as well as the hospital's, that sympo siums are field several times a year in the surrounding area for the personnel to attend. It is the responsibility of Mrs. Margaret Bennett, Direc tor of Nurses to attend or decide who should attend the va rious classes and bring back to the rest of the employees thru in-service education what she has learned by attending these seminars. The employees ask questions and she must know the answers. In this manner the hospital is able to keep up-to- date on the latest in medical care. While the director of nurses is a human being with human feelings, she must maintain an open-door policy to all situa tions and nursing service prob- Page Three lems. Each day brings prob lems of a different nature and each must be handled separately as human lives are involved. No employee should be asked to do a Job that a director does not want to perform merely to show authority. There is no room for personality conflicts or favoritism to any employee. Within the hospital is a pro fessional team of employees that strives for the best patient care and the recovery of the maximum number of patients. This could not be obtained if the hospital was not a smooth work ing organization. In this regard the Malheur Memorial Hospital has been very fortunate. Each employee has a feeling of self satisfaction in his or her em ployment. In turn, patients feel secure during their illnesses and the stay is more enjoyable at the Malheur Memorial Ho
