One Year.................... $6.00 Six Months................... $4.00 OREGON, IDAHO SENATORS INTRODUCI LEGISLATION FOR HELLS CANYON AREA Senators Frank Church, Mark Hatfield, Bob Packwood and Ja mes McClure introduced legis lation Mottay to create a new Hells Canyon National Recrea- tian Area. Their action fallows several months of n-.eettngs between tbe Oregon and Idaho Senators and represents a concmisus among the four lawmakers on the best management plan for the Hells Canyon region. "This legislation,” the four Senators said to a Joint state ment, “will offer permanent protection for the M iddle Snake River and the Hells Canyon area. Her mater nal gram^iareats are Mr. and Mrs. Golden Draper of Route 2, Nyssa, Oregon. l---- 10 YEARS AGO Three Nyssa students, Judy Laurence, Kathy Farmer and Owen Berrett attended the re cent JESSI sessions. Tbe young lathes participated in tbe science institute for girls at Willamette University in Salem. Berrett attended tbe session for boys at Oregon State Univer sity in Corvallis. • • * She was born January 23. 1864 in Ackerman. Mississippi. She was married to William Bumpas January 21, 1903, in Ladonia, Texas. They had Lived in Ari zona, Sweet Home. Oregon and Parma before moving to Nyssa in 1954. Her husband preceded her in death in 1961 in Boise. She is survived by two daugh ters, Dorothy Mae Miles, New Plymouth, and Mrs Ossie Sul livan, Parma; andoaeson, Dur- land Bumpas, Chula Vista, Ca lifornia. 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Dry Creek near Boise with the Rev. Robert Manley of the Nyssa Nazarene Church officiating, •jnder the direction of Lien- kaemper Chapel, Nyssa. CARD OF THANKS We’d like to express our sin cere appreciation to our many relatives and friends for their thoughtfulness in sending flo wers and food, and giving com forting words to our family at the passing of our darling in fant, Christine. —Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Pett and family. 20 YEARS AGO Connie is dead. It is true she was only a dog, but one that had lived in the affections of the Bill Wahlert family for most of her 13 years. Connie met sudden death last Thursday. She was ran over by a neighbor’s car while she lay asleep beneath it, pos sibly never bearing the motor start since she was almost totally deaf. As a tiny pup Connie was a gift by Wahlert to his wife, Nellie, before their marriage 13 years ago. For the past nine years she had been a familiar sight to the Wahlert*s many Nyssa friends. A party at five local business men left here Saturttay for a week of fishing at Rainbow Lake in Idaho. la the party were Fred Bracken, Lew Herriman, Jack Anderson, Jake Fischer and Leonard Hewett. 30 YEARS AGO During tbe remainder of July residents of Nyssa will be called open to buy at least SI worth of war stamps for tbe purchase and construction of tbe Shang ri-la” airplane carrier for tbe United States Navy as a sym bol of tbe havoc that is to be wrought upon Japan. M ora on page 4 ■ 60 YEARS AGO The Wettaesday evening cloudburst on tbe lulls up the Owyhee and tbe succeeding two days rain are without parallel in the annals of the river. This time it seems the old-timers have a right to say they “never saw the like before.” Cow Hollow »a* a raging torr» at and the bridge was washed down stream. Tbe Hollow backed up into Mrs Morey’s field it was so full. The Owyhee ditch waste gates could not take care of tbe floods and tbe ditch broke in many places once on Robert son's, on O Brien’s and twice on Charles Bradley's and other places farther down. Tbe ditch spilled over in many place* without breaking. Tbe douOiurst washed large boulders down a gulley above Adrian and washed out over a quarter of a mile of the Mini doka andSouthwestern's tracks. Much gra'n is lodged all over tbe cotmtry as a result of tbe deluge and some hay has spoil age. Probably th* worst damage to tbe hay resulted from wetting tbe stacked hay.
