April 2 Deadline Property Tax Exemptions For Vets Disabled war veterans and veterans* widows must apply for their annual Oregon pro perty tax exemptions by Mon day, April 2, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs cautioned to day. Application is made with the county assessor. H.C. Saalfeld, Veterans’ Af fairs director, said the exemp tion amounts to $7,500 of the true cash value of the property. Entitled are war veterans 40 percent or more disabled, and unremarried widows of war ve terans. Spanish-American War veterans don't have to prove disability. Disabled veterans or widows entitled to a tax reduction under the 1971 home-owners property tax relief act will have such relief reduced by the amount of veterans’ exemption they are entitled to, Saalfeld said. To get the maximum of tax relief, he said they must claim the veterans’ exemption in ad dition to the home-owners pro perty tax reduction. Application for the tax relief must be filed by Monday, April 16, with the county tax collector. Mrs. Leon Chamberlain at- tened the pancake supper put on by the Parma School Friday evening. It was a most enjoyable moment for Mike Benge of Heppner, newly-released pris oner of war, as he talked with Georgie Packwood, wife of Senator Bob Packwood. But when the photographer asked Mr. Benge to move closer to Georgie for the picture, he looked shyly at her and said "I haven't had my picture taken with a good looking girl in more than five years.” The 37-year-old former POW was re leased March 8 after being held captive by the Vietcong since 1968. He was in Vietnam as a development adviser of the Agency for International Development (AID) when captured. Mr. Benge was in Washington for a series of debriefings. The Packwoods went to see Mr. Benge at Bethesda Naval Hospital after he called the office and said he would like to visit with them.
