The mature larval forms are difficult to control with insec ticides. Bailey suggests that a close watch be kept on the pests and that heavy infestations be treated early to avoid heavy crop damage. Early treatment also catches the worms when they are smaller and more sus ceptible to insecticides. Army worms are making an appearance in some areas of Malheur County according to Malheur County Extension Agent, Leeds Bailey. Present infestations are mostly light but farmers should watch their fields closely as damaging num bers could develop. Alfalfa hay fields appear to be the primary target of the pests. Some fields were treated for the pests last year in the latter part of August and early September. Bailey said that the infesta tions usually start as definite spots in the field and spread from there. The defoliated spots show up with a silvery sheen .
