Thursday, July 20, 1972 The Nyssa Oat* City Journal, Nyssa, Oregon ¿Swensens Married 63 Years Celebrating their 63rdwed ding anniversary were Mr. and Mrs. Alvin C. Swensen, on July 12. It was announced nationwide on Paul Harvey’s program say ing; In Nyssa, Oregon^Arvilla and Alvin C. Swensen have been honeymooning for 63 years. The Swensens were married in the Logan LDS Temple at Logan, Utah July 12, 1909. Their 17th grandchild was also married at the Logan Temple on the same date 63 years later. , Arvilla and Alvin, both 83 years of age, traveled over thirty miles with buggy and team to the Logan Temple on their wedding day. They have lived in Nyssa for thirty-two years after coming from Preston, Idaho. Both the Swensens have pio neered in many conditions. He first combined grain with a sythe, to finally a threshing machine, rode wild horses and roped steers and farmed. Alvin C. was a night watchman at the Nyssa sugar factory for twenty years, and was still holding down a full time job at age 81 as custodian at the Owyhee LDS Church. The Swensens fulfilled a mis sion to the Southern States in 1964-65. NEWS FROM BIG BEND ................................ BY GOLDIE BIG BEND - Steve Davis flew to Seattle on Friday to at tend the wedding of Bob Bled soe of Marsing to Wakelee Olsen of Seattle. The wedding was held on Saturday at the Ladies Chapel, St. James Ca thedral in Seattle. Steve ser ved as best man for the groom. The reception was held at the Pacific Evergreen Room, Oly mpic Hotel in Seattle. Mrs. Edythe Prosser and Mrs. Dyre Roberts attended the Happy. Dozen Card Club at the home of Mrs. Bernice Toomb in Kingman Kolony Friday af ternoon. Mrs. Roberts was a prize winner. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sillonis and girls returned home Thurs day morning from a short va cation spent in Western Ore gon. They visited her relatives Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Brolin in Grants Pass, and also a friend Mrs. Karen Mason in Ashland. They also assisted his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sillonis in getting packed to move to their new home in Orofino, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. RayCartwright were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Barbee in Nampa. In the afternoon they visited the Arthur Harmistons . Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller of Ontario called on Mr. and Mrs. Noel Tuppeny Saturday. Mrs. Mary Auker returned home Thursday from a vaca tion spent with her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Don Costley and girls at Aloha, Oregon. Rosie Shirk, Tenley Howell and Judy Cahney spent last week at the Presbyterian Church Camp near Ketchum, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Witty went after them Sunday. George Elfers, Jr. of Seattle visited his father, George El- happy. The couple have 28 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. Their anniversary cele bration this year was held at the home of their daugh ter, Mrs. Ariel (Barbara) Meek at Preston, Idaho. Another daughter, Mrs. Ar vin (Donna) Ovray, Payette, at tended. Those children unable to attend were Mrs. Dwayne (Reba) Cornish, Payette; Mrs. Dave (Mary) Bateman, Boise; Major Lynn Swensen, Layton, Utah; and Max C. Swensen of Michigan. Boyce Van De Water and his children surprised Mrs. Van De Water on her birthday Sun day with a dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Reed in Boise. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Bill Van De Water and family of Adrian and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Bauman and family of Nyssa. Mr. and Mrs. Horace Chaney entertained Sunday with a birth day dinner for their son Dallas. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Errol Jensen and family of Nampa; Mr. and Mrs. Ro land Graham and family and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brownfield of Boise, Mrs. Don Kadel and children of Caldwell; Mrs. Dal las Chaney and family; Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Gifford of Wil der and Mrs. Mary Aschin. Mrs. Dyre Roberts attended funeral services in Nampa, Tuesday for Marvin Blanksma. Later in the evening she called on Mrs. Marvin Blanksma and Mrs. Bernice Blanksma and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Weaver. She was a supper guest of her sister and mother, Marie Doug las and Florence Henderlider. Mrs. Roberts had stayed in the Blanksma home and helped care for Marvin and his bro ther Wayne as babies and small children. David Witty and children came last Monday for a visit. Mr. Witty returned to his home in Elma, Washington, Wednes day and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Witty took the children home Sunday. Mr. Gordon DeGroff of Stan ton, California left Wednesday for Northern Idaho after a visit here with Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Van De Water. Mr. and Mrs. John Luciano and daughters, Rebecca and Teresa of Denver came Satur day to spend a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Noel Tuppeny. • Mrs. Edythe Prosser and Mrs. Dyre Roberts were Wed nesday luncheon guests of Mrs. Delno Brock in Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Muri Burns of Nyssa and Mr. Merl Smith of Grants Pass were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Sillonis for dinner and homemade ice cream Sunday. Sunday callers at the Noel Tuppeny home to see their com pany were, Mrs. Dyre Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Brum baugh, Jr. and daughters of Roswell and her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Lowe of Los Angeles , California, who are enroute to their summer home at Colville, Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Witty re turned home last Monday from a two weeks vacation to Illi nois. They visited her parents at Gladstone and other rela tives nearby. They drove to Galena and visited the home that U. S. Grant had lived in. Enroute they stopped at West Branch, Iowa and visited the Herbert Hoover Birthplace. Little Billy Van De Water of Adrian spent from Tuesday until Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Van De Water while his mother and sisters vacationed at the Owyhee Dam. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Cheetum and family of Ontario were Sun day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Bennett and family. Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Callahan, were Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Callahan of Springville, Utah. Pago Throe Mr. and Mrs. Kent Bowers Wed hi L.D.S. Church Terry Lynn Neely and Kent Noel Bowers chose the evening of May 20, 1972 for their mar riage at the Ontario L.D.S. Church with baskets of dark red roses as decorations. Bis hop Glen Banner, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints officiated at the double ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Winn of Nyssa and the bridegroom’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bowers of Ontario. Given in marriage by her father, Bill Winn, the bride wore a traditional gownofChan- tilly lace over satin. The fitted bodice was fashioned with a square neckline and long tapered sleeves. Tiers of lace accented the bouffant skirt which fell into a Chapel train. Her illusion veil was trimmed with a border of lace and was held in place by a tiaria. The bride, according to custom, wore a blue garter, a new penny in her shoe and carried a handkerchief which originally belonged to her great-grandmother Morrison. Her bouquet was a cascade of burgundy colored roses cen tered with a detachable cor sage of white orchids. Miss Sharon Kurtz was the maid of honor. She wore a pink satin empire styled dress of floor-length which featured a bolero of burgundy velvet and carried a bouquet of pink roses. The bridesmaids, Mrs. Doug (Edie) Wheeler and Miss Mary Corfield, the bride’s sisters and Mrs. Harold (Dodie) Cor field, sister-in-law of the bride, wore dresses and carried bou quets identical to the maid of honor. Flower girl, Debie Corfield, niece of the bride, was attired in a pink satin floor-length gown. David Harris served as best man. Ushering the 150 guests were Jim Schaffeld, Plácido Marteniz, Jr. and Loren Bowers, brother of the groom. A two-piece yellow knit suit was chosen by Mrs. Bill Winn for her daughters wedding while Mrs. Ted Bowers, bridegroom’s mother, wore a pink knit dress with accenting scarf. Both mo thers wore pink rose corsages. A reception was held in the church reception hall following the ceremony. A three-tiered cake de corated with pink roses and small baskets of lilies of the valley between the cake columns was especially made by the bridegroom’s mother, Mrs. Bo wers, and served by Mrs.Claire Bowers, sister-in-law of the groom, and Mrs. Clarence Heath, groom’s aunt. Mrs. James Bowers, sister-in-law of the groom poured the punch. Special out-of-state guests were Mrs. Blanch Neely, grand mother of the bride, Payette; Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bowers of Spokane, Washington and Mr. and Mrs. James Bowers of Boise, both brothers of the groom. Miss Pam Me Partland, Miss Patty Seuell and Miss Sharmon Sadamori, friends of the bride, received the gifts.
