Thursday, June 1, 1972 Th# Nyssa Gat# City Journal, Nyssa, Oregon Fire Destroys Hom Nyssa volunteer firemen are shown fighting the fire which destroyed the frame house owned by Ed Cordova at 805 Ehrgood Avenue. The house was rented to Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Almarez, who were not home at the time, and the fire was apparently caused by a faulty electrical connection. Bank Debits which blew up the Stucco house belonging to Charles Romans. Early Saturday morning the neighbor hood was again awa kened between 1:30 and 2 a.m. when a freight train lost a wheel and was derailed at the crossing on Interstate going to the Charles Mann and Pace homes. About 35 cars con taining apple butter, frozen foods and lumber were broken open and piled 2 to 3 cars high, tearing up and twisting the rail road rails. Heavy equipment was brought in and nut to work clearing up the right of way. A new track was laid and trains were able to go through again about midnight. The broken box cars are still alongside of the new track. Mrs. Engelhardt with the other grade teachers took the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade pupils to Boise Tuesday for a sight seeing trip. USS JOHN F. KENNEDY Navy Seaman Gary L. Moss, son of Mrs. Marguerite Moss of Route 2, Nyssa, took part in the North Atlantic Treaty Or ganization’s operation "Dawn Patrol” aboard the air craft carrier USS John F. Ken nedy in the Mediterranean. The exercise involved our Sixth Fleet and the navies of eight other NATO nations, and was designed to strengthen al lied coordination during com bined forces operations. Colin Chester, son of Mr and Mrs. Gene Chester, re turned home this weekaftertwo years active duty in the U.S. Navy. He will remain in an inactive status in the Naval Reserve. Chester served aboard the U.S.S. LONG BEACH, a guided missile cruiser. They were in Haiphong harbor just prior to its mining, and participated in offshore bombardment of North Vietnam. Gold Hill, Oregon were over night guests Friday and Satur day of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sod- owsky. The also attended Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pitman’s 50th wedding anniversary reception. They were Monday overnight guests in the Pitman home and also visited other friends while here. Don Fritts was home Thurs day evening and over the week end for Steve Fritts high school graduation. Larry Hunt from BYU visited with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Gooing on his way home to Baker Friday for the summer vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Harris and family of Springfield, Oregon spent the Memorial Day week end visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Boston and other relatives. Thursday evening around 6:35 p.m. the neighborhood quiet was shattered by a loud explosion, Pag# Five APPLE VALLEY - Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Whittom were week end guests of Nell Correll. John Peterson and mother of Salt Lake City were in the Apple Valley community on Saturday visiting with many of their friends. They were for mer residents of Apple Valley and sold their farm to John Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Alex Wagner are the grandparents of a baby girl born May 23 to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Striker of Payette, at the Ontario Hospital. She was named Kassandra Ann and weighed seven pounds and nine ounces. Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Smalley heped move Mrs. Bill Anders to her new hemp at Lake Lowell Thursday morning. The Susannah Circle will meet June 8 at Mrs. William Knox’s home. Each person is asked to bring some poem or article on Fathers Day for the afternoon’s program.
