The ponds were purchased by the Commission this past year. The bass came from the Commissions Warm- water Game Fish Ponds near St. Paul. The Ontario ponds had been treated this fall with rotenone to eliminate carp and stunted bluegill populations that w°re providing little fishing recreation. In addition to the bass, bluegill, and channel cat fish will tx> released in the ponds in th? near future. It is hoped, th at desireable warm water gam? fish populations can be maintained for all anglers to enjoy. 1971 SECURITY 1T WITH REF., c. Monomatic furnace - Delux, Wilton C. Jackson Phone 372-2215. H inters were allowed to pack in on foot or horseback to any part of the unit they desired, but the road blocks in effect over m ich of the better elk range forced hunters to challenge their quarry on foot, even to backpacking down ed animals to camp. Final figures for the Ches- nimtius season are incomplete. Hewever, Ron Bartels, district game biologist at Enterprise, said that of 3,349 nimrods checked in and out of the area, 2,905 endorsed 'he restrictions and urged more of the same in other areas of the state. As one man aptly put it. "This pu's a man on foot and mokes hunting what it should be. It puts the hunt back in hunting. It’s almost like it was up here 20 or 30 years ago ” Even a paraplegic on crutches was en thusiastic. although this man's foot travel was highly limited and restricted to the flattest and easiest terrain. Bartels said that 293 persons (9 percent) opposed the restric tions while 151 hunters (4 per cent) had no opinion or wished to reserve judgment. As expected from tlie road blocks and curtailed vehicular travel, the bull elk kill was down from the previous year. Incomplete figures show 271 bulls taken for an 8 percent suc cess ratio compared to413 bulls taken in 1970 for an 11 per cent success ratio. Antler less elk hunters took 129 ant lerless animals for 75 percent hunter success compared to 54 antlerless animals and 68 percent success in 1970. Hunters, cooperating whole heartedly during the season, policed their own ranks and were quick to report violations to officials. Nineteen citations were issued for violating road closures. Illegal kills were down, according to Bartels, with only 7 tallied compared to 20 illegal kills in 1970.
