Rayon paper was selected by the Swedes, who invented this system, various plastic mate rials were also considered for the job Some failed because they formed erosive vapors when burned. Others lacked sufficient strength. All plastic materials suffer from one seri ous deficiency in landfill — they do not easily degrade by the natural processes which convert much of our garbage back into soil. Perhaps the most effective way to dispose of a communi ty’s garbage once it is collected is by burying it. Unlike burn ing, which tends to pollute the air, burial breaks garbage down without harmful effects to the environment. Since plastic is not easily broken down by bac teria, buried plastic bags pro tect themselves and their con tents from the very natural processes that would dispose of our disposables in the most de sirable way. Spectacle Has Cast of 500 The triumphant appearance of Christ to an ancient Ameri can civilization after his death and resurrection in Jerusalem climaxes an awe-inspiring pageant to be presented near Palmyra, New York July 26-31. This will be the 1971 produc tion of America's most famous, most elaborate religious spec- tacle—The Hill ~ Cumorah Pageant—with a cast of 500 performers. More than 100,000 speda tors from over the United States and from overseas are expected to journey to Hill Cumorah to witness one spec tacular scene after another in a stirring portrayal of the Mor mon concept of the rise and fall of an ancient American civilization There is no charge for seating or parking, no hawking of sou venirs hnd refreshments, no commercialism of any kind, and donations are neither soli cited nor accepted. Palmyra is in the Finger Lakes Region of Western New York 25 miles east of Rochester. STAGES ENLARGED In preparation for this year's production. Dr Harold I Han sen, the Pageant’s director since its inception, in 1937, has had the five major stages wid ened by 22 to 32 feet so that they now measure 105 feet to 135 feet. In addition, there are 20 secondary stages located over the broad western slope of Hill Cumorah. A. This large factory employes over 350 peo ple during the corn season, in addition to the 20 who make up the year-round per sonnel. To the accompaniment of s t ereophonically-recorded music by a chorus of 300, the Utah Symphony of HO pieces, and the renowned Salt Lake Tabernacle Organ of 11,000 pipes, the action shifts from stage to stage, some of which are veiled by curtains of water on which varicolored lights paint effects of breathtaking incandescence. After Josephs assassination in Illi nois in 1844, Brigham Young became the head of the Church and led his people to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Today the Church has con gregations around the world with a total membership of three million The 500 Mormon performers and the technical staff of 50 are mostly young men and women, many of them from the Western states, who pay their own travel and living ex penses to participate in the spectacle Many of the young men are performing a two-year service as missionaries in the East. Annual Mormon Religious ACnV ITI E S IN AR( LADlT^ TRY THIS TIRE SAFETY QUIZ CANNING THE CAN Garbage is a dirty word in many American communities who have found that refuse collection and disposal rank third in community costa — right after roads and education. In the nick-of-time, however, a new system has appeared which can lower pickup costs by 20% or more and, at the same time, dispose of the clat ter and clank of garbage cans and the mess of spilled garbage The idea is a simple one: re place the garbage can system with a new one that does away with the need to lug heavy cans to the trash trucks and back — and the need to pick up spills. Instead of a can, garbage is put into a fresh, clean dispos able paper sack that is support ed by a metal frame, and has an attached lid. Only the bag is portable. To collect the gar bage the bag is lifted out of the frame and thrown into the truck. Besides eliminating pick up labor, mess, noise and a breeding ground for flies (the can), the system will also elimi nate many a wrenched back — especially during winter months, when wet garbage has a tendency to freeze and stick to the can. The paper must be strong, especially when wet.
