HSSSSBSSSSSSSStsJSSSSS DALE WITTPHONE 372-2183 KINGMAN KOLONY - Mrs. Klaas Laan, Mrs. Oscar Schafer and Mrs. Minnie Stam attended the Home Extension Achieve ment Day in Ontario Thursday. Mrs. Klaas Laan left Monday for Corvallis where she will attend the State Council meet ing for Home Extension and also visit her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Macy. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Osborn and Mrs. Bill Toomb had Sun day dinner at the Twilight Cafe in Nyssa and visited Mr. and Mrs. Wendal Richmond in the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Begeman Spent the weekend with her niece, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Young and family of CoosBay, Oregon. They were met there by her brother, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Hodge of Chino, Calif.; an other niece, Mr. and Mrs. Cla- fence Dutton of Olympia Wash.; and their married daughter, Mrs. March Pugh and two child ren of Puyallup, Wash. They visited until Sunday then toured the Docks and Boat Basin and watched the ocean freighters leave Coos Bay. Monday they were luncheon guests of former Newell Heights residents, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Borge at Reeds port. Begeman’s returned home Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gerhke of Mountain Home were week end visitors of their daughter, WANTS Whitman’s Sampler Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rhodes. The Happy Dozen Card Club met Friday afternoon with Gnetty Piercy. Guest players were Elsie Divens, Rose Willis, Marg Looney and Laura Brock. Winners were Rose Willis, Gol die Roberts, Sue Ashcraft and Minnie Stam. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Long of Adrian were Sunday evening visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Al Thompson. Jimmie Nedrow attended the 4-H meeting in Adrian Satur day and also attended the birth day party for Michael Powell that afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Myron Osborn and family went to Emmett Sunday and visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Cearley and other members of the family. It was a surprise potluck dinner for her father’s birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Slippy of LaGrande spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Campbell, their daughter Lee came Tuesday and returned home with her parents Sunday. Lois and DonCone, Fred Mar tin and Lisa Sykes spent Sunday afternoon visiting in the Earl Campbell home. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Robb were Friday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Vance and family in Wilder. Mead Robb of Caldwell visi ted the Wayne Robb home Sun day afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Robb visited Mr. and Mrs. Paul Coonts in Wilder Saturday eve ning. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Schaffer and Mr. and Mrs.Clyde Bowers had a picnic at the Owyhee Dam Sunday. Thanks to the Senior Citizens, a May Day Party was held for the residents of Malheur Memorial Nursing Home, Saturday May 1. Cake and ice cream was served and each of the 33 residents was presented with a May Basket. The baskets, made by the Sen ior Citizens,consisted of plastic berry baskets, tied with pretty ribbons and filled with a lovely array of spring flowers in a va riety of colors. Those assisting with the party were Dr. and Mrs. John Long, Mrs. Edith Reece, Mrs. Ann Marostica, senior citizens, and Mrs. Serena Stevens of the hospital staff, and candy stripers Norma Menchaca and Roberta Morrow. During the party Mrs. Long furnished background music on the piano. The Senior Citizens also de livered May Baskets to shut- ins in the area. VEGETABLES Vegetables entirely fresh will cook quicker than those that have stood for sometime. Most vege tables are better steamed than boiled. It is conceded that vege tables cook more easily in soft water than hard. When put over to cook, unless otherwise di rected, put into boiling water and keep it boiling, else by stopping, the lowered tempera ture will soften them and de tract from their color. After washing vegetables, lay them in cold water till time to cook. It is particularly necessary to put cabbage or cauliflower into cold water half an hour before cooking. This will drain out any imbedded insets that might be in the leaves, and makes them crisp and nicer in every way. Put all vegetables in boiling water; unless otherwise direc ted. A pinch of salt, pepper or spice means about 1/4 teaspoon. POTATO CAKES 1 quart grated raw potatoes, measured after grating. 4 eggs well beaten 1 tablespoon flour pinch of salt 1 teaspoon baking powder Fry in skillet in hot lard, in flat cake, turning like batter cakes. Serve hot. Leave the water in the potatoes after gra ting. RULES OF CONDUCT Never fail to give a polite answer to a civil question. Never question a servant or child about family matters. Never present a gift saying it is of no use to yourself. Never read letters which you find addressed to others. Never call attention to the features or form of anyone present. Never look over the shoulder of one who is reading or wri ting. TURNIPS Peal, cut in slices, and steam, when done mash, add salt, a teaspoon of sugar, 2 or 3 table spoons of milk or cream and a little butter. This will make old turnips taste like new. Mrs. Kenneth Saunders was a visitor. Mrs. Bowers acted as president, Mrs. Tom Drydale drew the hostess gift. The next meeting will be May 14 at Mrs. Ted Bowers west of Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Boekweg from Ogden and Mrs. Cary Boekweg and Timmy from Mountain Home visited Mr. and Mrs. George Moeller Satur day afternoon. They also visited Mrs. Boekweg’s brother, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Beckstead west of Nyssa. Steven Bullard, eight months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Bullard was brought home May 1 from Ontario where he had been in Ontario hospital with pneumonia. A number of people from Arcadia attended open house for Mr. and Mrs. Ted Bowers of Ontario on their 25th wed ding anniversary. The Arcadia club sent a flower arrangement. Scott and Lance Norman spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. George Moeller while their mo ther attended the Christian Business Women’s Conference in Boise at the Rodeway Inn. Steven andSherri Bright from Fruitland spent the weekend in the George Hust home, while their mother, Mrs. Danny Bright attended a Women Christian retreat near Salem. REBEKAHS MEET The Yellow Rose Rebekah Lodge met at the IOOF Hall April 27 with Noble Grand Nel lie Jenkins presiding. Merle Johnson, Good of the Order Chairman presented a reading. Delicious refreshments were served to the 15 members pre sent by Emily Clapp and Nita Mae Wiley. The Kollens owned the farm now operated by the H. Okano families. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Snyder of Nyssa were Sunday afternoon visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Price. On Friday, sixteen members, $ their friends and families of the Owyhee Garden Club went on a rock tour which took them to the Quartz Mountain area, located above the Owyhee Dam country. The report finding both good weather, roads and of course a good time was in the kettle also. Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Nielsen of Ontario, Mr. and Mrs. Elver Nielsen, were visitors at the home of their mother, Mrs. Effie Nielsen in Nu Acres on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Elver Nielsen were Sunday evening callers at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Robb. Mrs. E.J, Hobson attended a dinner which was hosted at the East Side, in Ontario on Sunday honoring the birthday anniver sary of Mrs. Joe Hobson. Harriet Lorensen and Car men Astoreca, were among Ad rian seventh and eighth gra ders who went on a field trip Friday. School buses took them to the Succor Creek area where they picnicked and studied the rock formations and flowers. Mrs. Maude Cooper of Vale and Mrs. Harriet Turner of Owyhee Junction, were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Lorensen and family.
