Several days ago I had a hur ried encounter with a TV wea ther forecaster. Our conversa tion went something like this, “Man”, I said, ”1 hope you can hold the snow off till I get home.” The forecaster looked at his watch and said, “Well you’ll have to make it in an hour and a half.” “Yeah”, I replied, “that means it will be a beau tiful day tomorrow.” Now I was only kidding and I hope the broadcaster realized this but I felt a little funny the next morning when I looked out of the window and couldn’t see a cloud in the sky. I remember several years ago I was riding in a boat with another weather forecaster. I was being drenched with a down pour that shouldn’t have been because the man I was talking to had predicted, “Clear and pleasant”. Of course I mentioned this to him and all he said was, “Not you too.” Newspapers can say anything they please and it won’t hurt anybody because nobody knows who writes the misinformation in the newspaper about the wea ther. The radio man is just a voice and no one pays much attention to him but the TV forecaster has to stand up in front of you and everybody else and speak out loud and clear— you can see him and feel that you know him because he’s there in front of you. Of course he can sort of alibi with his per cent chance section but if he says rain and it’s nice you don’t forget. Worse if you plan a pic nic on his say-so and get rained out you not only don’t forget but you don’t forgive. We’re prone to notice every mistake and error but fail to remember the many, many times he’s correct. I’ve SEEN storms coming into Meadows Valley and I’ve SEEN them split and go down each side, leaving New Meadows dry as a bone. I can’t say for sure what will happen today when I look out of the window, let alone what is happening on the other side of the mountain. I think the weatherman has a miserable job, I wouldn’t want it. I’ll try not to gig the newscaster anymore but to be right honest I’ll be strongly tempted. They must have a high percentage of accuracy otherwise I wouldn’t bother to watch them to see what the weather will be like this week end.
