The Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Marketing Order Com mittee met last week in Payette, under the chairmanship of Lyle Andrews. Warren Henninger, Malheur County Extension Agent, said a review of the over all late late summer onion pro duction potentials was made. The production forecast of the late summer onioncrop released by the USDA on August 7th show > the crop to be the largest on record with a 7 percent nation wide increase over a year ago. New York State shows an in crease in acreage for 1970 and about a 1/4 increase in production, Michigan shows about a 10 percent increase in production increases are also shown in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Utah. This Idaho-Oregon district shows about a 4 percent increase. The total summer onion production is set at 21,- 403,000 cwt. This compares to 19.928,000 cwt in 1969. The indicated production figure for this Idaho-Oregon district is set at 3,960,000 cwt. compared to 3,818,000 for 1969. Onion shipments from this area were reported to be down. The total carlot shipments of onions as of September 8 is 199 compared to 651 carlots up to this same time a year ago. The demand for this area’s onion is lair, with the market being steady, said Henninger. F.O.B. price for U.S. No. 1 yellow Spanish onions 3 inches and larger is $1.50 for a 501b. sack. In the interest of the onion industry of this district the Idaho-Eastern Oregon Marke ting Order Committee isasking for the following changes in the 1970/71 onion marketing order regulations for yellow onions shipped from this district: the Minimum size for U.S. No. 1 yellow to be changed from 2 inch minimum to 2 1/4 inch mini mum size. The minimum size for U.S. No. 2 yellows to be changed from 2 inch minimum to 3 inch minimum. This means that all U.S. No. 2 mediums will be eliminated from the mar ket, said Henninger. This recommendation made by the Idaho-Eastern Oregon Onion Marketing Order Com mittee is subject to the approval of the Secretary of Agriculture. Henninger said all indications are that these new regulations should be in force sometime around the end of next week. It is the hope of the marke ting order committee that these new regulations will assist the onion industry of this area in successful marketing of the yel low sweet Spanish onions.
