I ♦ I I Dr. J. H. Jackson, Teacher I t A I I I ! » f The largest Negro organization in the United States is the Nat ional Baptist Convention. It has six-and-a-half million members. The president of the organization for the past fifteen years has been Dr. J. H. Jackson. Dr. Jackson addressed the convention recently. His words bear repeating, and we shall hope that they will be heeded by our readers of every race. Here, in part, is what a wise teacher had to say: ‘While we have lost many of the white‘liberals’ who have sup ported the cause of civil rights from an unselfish point of view,.... the Negro race has won as companions other white ‘liberals’ who are determined to use the Negro race to help them divide and destroy unity, fellowship, and life of this nation. The purpose of these white ‘liberals’ is the complete regimentation of 22 million Negroes as an army to be marshaled under their lead ership and direction, and to be used by them at will. ’....there is a way out. Negroes in the U. S. must assume the same type of responsibility for saving this nation as any other group of American citizens. ‘I am still convinced that, in the long run, dedication to the laws of this land is better than any form of lawlessness or any acts of civil disobedience. ‘Negroes must make it crystal clear that they will not be used or deceived by politicians who make long and loud promises, but are exceedingly short of fulfillment. ‘Any group of white Americans who condone us in any form for law-breaking, and who encourage us to demonstrate in such a way that we hinder our own growth and development -- such leaders do not plan to give us first-class citizenship or to rec ognize us as equals under the law. ‘Let us rise above all movements and all plots, and work as Americans to make America a free land of free people in which -and by which the democratic process can unfold in its fullness, and the rights of all can be protected without compromise.’ The militants and malcontents make headlines. OF ENGLISH NYSSA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL For well over three hundred years the opera has been one of the most alluring forms of musical entertainment. A special glamor attaches to everything connected with it—its arias, singers, and roles, not to mention its opening nights. Carmen, Mimi, Aida, Tristan--what character in fact or fiction can claim, generation after generation, so constant a public? An opera is a drama that is sung. It combines the resources of vocal and instrumental music, soloists, ensembles, and chorus, orchestra and ballet, with poetry and drama, acting and panto mime, scenery and costumes. To weld the diverse elements into a unity is a problem that has exercised some of the best minds in the history of music. At first glance opera would seem to make impossible de mands on the credulity of the spectator. It presents us with human beings caught up in dramatic situations, who sing to each other instead of speaking. The reasonable question is: how can an art form based on so unnatural a procedure be convincing? How can it bring about that suspension of dis belief’ which is the essence of the theater experience? The question ignores what must always remain the fundamental aspiration of art: not to copy nature but to heighten our aware ness of it. True enough, people in real life do not sing to each other. Neither do they converse in blaqk verse, as Shakespeare’s characters do; nor live in rooms of which one wall is convenient ly missing so that the audience may look in. All the arts employ conventions that are accepted both by the artist and his audience. Lyric poetry gives the impression of being a spontaneous utterance; yet much of it is arranged in the most artful patterns of meter and rhyme. We respond to the illusion of depth in a painting even though we know that the can vas is flat. The conventions of opera are more in eveidence than those of poetry, painting, drama, or film, but they are not 4 different in kind. Once we have accepted the fact that the carpet can fly, how simple to believe that it is also capable of carrying the prince’s luggage. Opera functions in the domain of the poetic drama. It uses the human voice to impinge upon the spectator the basic emotions--love, hate, jealousy, joy, grief--with an elemental force possible only to itself. The logic of reality gives way on the operatic stage to the transcendent logic of art, and to the power of music over the life of the heart. The next two columns will be concerned with the components of opera and the language problem involved in opera. In the meantime, why don’t you listen to an opera?
