THURSDAY, MAY 16, 1963 Nyssa FFA Students Receive Top Honors In Judging Contest A soil judging contest for Fu ture Farmers of America in the Snake River district was held Saturday at Vale and was co sponsored by the Vale FFA chap ter and the Malheur Soil Conser vation district. The students were given three sites to judge and the competition began at 9 o’clock in the morn ing. Burrell Lovell was official judge. The judging team from Nyssa was comprised of Jay Garner, Roy Gibson, Mark Stephen, John Glascock and Vaughn Schulthies. The family came io Nyssa recently from Hagerman, Idaho, where he was with the Idaho Pow er plant. Mrs. Easton works as an aide at the nursing home in On tario. While at Hagerman, Easton was noble grand of Odd Fellows lodge and his wife was active in Job's Daughters and a past prin cess of that organization. Department of Agriculture Release Compares Livestock Totals With 1962 Oregon continued in 29th place nationally in its cattle to tals in 1962, and its number of cattle was 1,435,000, the same as the previous year, despite the national increase in 1962. Figures received by the Oregon Department of Agriculture from the . S. Department of Agriculture listed the nation’s from the U. S. Sheep Numbers Decline Oregon moved into 13th spot nationally from 14th place in the number of sheep reported, but the total number of sheep and lambs Nationally, too, the number was down. The first of this year 30,- 170,000 were recorded. A year ago it was 31,446,000. Texas also led the nation in sheep numbers in 1962. Their figure was 5,651,- 000. Oregon Hogs Decrease Nationally, hog numbers in creased during 1962, but Oregon showed a drop. However, it was in 29th place nationally for both years. At the end of 1962, Oregon had 267,000 of the 94,244,000 hogs recorded for the nation. The state had 271,000 on Jan. 1, 1962, and the nation, 93,173,000. Iowa continued to lead the nation in hog production, but while the nation showed an in crease in numbers, Iowa had a decrease.
