F .n al tab u latio n s of the kill show a w hopping total of 134,089 deer taken setting a new record for the state. H unters reported taking 82.136 bucks and 48,955 an tlerless deer during the general season. C on trolled hunts produced 2.743 a n i m als while 252 w ere taken by bow hunters. A total of 230,588 nim rods participated, also a rec ord, and enjoyed a 59 p er cent success. As in the past, h u n ters in W al lowa county enjoyed the best 1-uck w here 76 per cent of the 5,377 nim rods who hun ted th ere re ported bagging an anim al. R e ports show a total of 4,085 deer w ere taken of w hich 2,733 w ere bucks. H unters in W heeler county w ere second on th e list w ith a 74.5 per cent success reported by 6,853 hunters. Of the 5,107 deer tak en in W heeler county, 3,054 w ere bucks. T hird w as H arney county w here 9,639 h u n ters reported bag- j ging 7,063 deer of w hich 5,086 c a r ried antlers. Success am ong these hunters was 73.3 per cent. O ther counties w here luck ran high include B aker county w here 72.3 per cent of the 7,854 h u n ters w ere successful, G ra n t county w here 14,749 h u n ters enjoyed a 72.1 p er cent success, and M alheur county w here 71.6 p ercen t of the 5,157 hunters bagged an anim al. A total of 6,083 of the big w apiti w ere tak en by the s ta te ’s 33,009 elk h u n ters during the general and controlled hunts. The kill broke all previous Oregon records except th e all-t.m e high 1949 sea son. T he general season produced 4,578 anim als for som e 29,309 h u n ters for a success ratio of 16.1 p e r cent, while th e controlled hu n ts produced 1.505 anim als for 3.700 p erm it holders for a 40.7 p er cent success. L eadership by county shifted back to northeastern Oregon, w ith U m atilla leading th e field. In U m atilla county 1.537 elk fell to th e h u n te rs’ guns, 955 d u rin g the g eneral season, and 582 on con tro lled perm it hunts. W allowa county held second place w here nim rods bagged 1,123 of the big w apiti, 795 during the general season, and 328 on th e perm it units. U nion county produced 834 anim als and G rant 686.
