TRAFFIC FATALITIES DROP Even war has some recompense. Over the New Year’s holiday only 115 violent deaths were reported. These were caused by automobile accidents, fire, drownings, shootings and miscellaneous accidents. Because of war conditions, gasoline and tire rationing, traffic accident deaths are running about 50 per cent below normal. VICTORY TAX WILL PINCH Aside from purchase of war bonds and sta mps, the American people are really going to feel the pinch of war when they start paying the victory tax this month. The tax became effective January 1, but not many employers will deduct it until Saturday and those paying by the month will not deduct it until the end of January. Of course, certain exemptions and credits will be allowed, making the plan complicated like anything else that congressvhas anything to do with. The inspector is to give the vehicle owner efficient and courteous inspection service and assist him in every way possible to keep his tires and tubes in serviceable condition. The inspector is to be regarded by the vehicle owner as a friendly and helpful tire maintenance expert. It is the duty of every inspector to foster such an attitude on the part of the vehicle owner. Vehicles must be maintained in service with the greatest possible conservation of rubber. B. Any violation of the tire rationing regulations by a tire inspector or a tire inspection station will be dealt with promptly. Careless or dishonest inspection or collusion between an inspector and a motor vehicle owner- % ter two warnings will be cause for withdrawal of the station's official inspection authority. To assist the inspectors car owners must have the tires of their ears mounted so the serial numbers are visible from the outside and should make comments on any breaks or other bad places in their tires.
