A ll Nyssa grocery stores will feature U. S. Number One potatoes, and every other mer chant in the city will have a display o f the tubers. All of which should be a proper prelude to the arrival of the Union Pacific’s potato dem onstration train that arrives in Nyssa next W ed nesday, at 1:30 p. m., which will be an educa tion in itself for not only the potato grower, but for the general public as well. Perhaps the idea is not original, but we be lieve that the Nyssa merchants will show the way to a lot of other communities of the same size, and to not a few of larger population, in this idea of “ Potato Week.’’ all this scurrying around for the public’s I N attention, on the part of would-be presi dential candidates, most of whom are trying to outdo the other fellow on the matter of being a “ liberal” , it is interesting to note that none, or at least very few of them, have developed a lib eral attitude toward our American farmers. The other night, Paul V. McNutt spent the better part of a half hour extolling the virtues of Sec retary Hull’s trade agreements. He was particu larly jubilant over the fact that our exports to the South American countries had increased twenty-eight per cent, he was careful, however, not to mention the increase o f farm commodi ties from those same countries into the United States. W e are beginning to wonder if there is any one seeking office these days who has taken time out to figure up a way o f giving our own fanners a chance at our own national markets? Paul McNutt seems to be painted with the same brush that most of the bureaucrats in Washington are. And it is our guess that his lat est talk has gained him little favor in the eyes of the American fanner. SOCIALISM BEGINS TO H U RT O W N in the T V A area they are finding out that the socialists’ gayly painted word picture of what happens when government goes into business don’t exactly jibe with the tacts produced by hard experience. D Every time T V A , a government business ven ture, takes over private property, that property is removed from the tax rolls. And the T V A pays next to nothing in taxes itself, by compari son with what was paid by the private power companies it has absorbed. The result is that state and local units of government have been trying, unsuccessfully, to make both ends meet without soaking the remaining taxpayers. A considerable number of public officials in Tennessee are now demanding that Congress pass a law removing T V A ’s tax immunity. And the Georgia legislature has passed two bills at tempting to give taxing boaies the right to tax Federal property engaged in “ proprietary” busi ness in competition with private enterprise. And the same legal experts are convinced that Geor gia’s laws will never survive attack in the Fed eral courts. So the Southeast is learning that it can’t have its cake and eat it too. This same problem is faced by every section where tax-exempt gov ernment projects compete with heavily-taxed private enterprise.
