NYSSA GATE CITY JOURNAL’S PROGRAM -------- + --------- Completion of the I-O-N Highway. Co-operative Marketing Association for Malheur Farmers. POLITICAL JOCKEYING? week, along with the usual bushels of T HIS governmental propaganda, comes a subtle bit of news that is captioned “Western Men Get High Position In USDA Shakeup.” This comes, indirectly from Secretary Wallace’s De partment of Agriculture. We wonder — about that “shakeup”— it couldn’t be that the Secretary is beginning to realize that his regimentation of the farmers is beginning to have it’s repercussion from a poli tical angle? The wheat allottments have not gained a thing for the farmer, neither has corn, or cotton, to say nothing of the beet sugar situ ation. The farmer, it may be said, is slow to form his opinion, but once formed, nationally, those opinions are as inexorable as the raising of the sun. As far as the “shakeup” is concerned we fail to note where there will be any political heads lopped off-rather the simple expedient of creat ing a few more jobs, and it will be the same old gang working in the same old manner. As to the “western men” only one of these new appointments is listed as owning land in the west. The others are termed westerners, only by virtue of the fact that they have attended col lege, and in one case has relatives living in the west. All of which looks to us as if the Secretary of Agriculture is beginning to “see the light” and we can expect to hear of a lot more of these “shakeups”—with the hope of maintaining vote power. But which it seems to us, to be so much political jockeying. GOOD CITIZENSHIP DEMANDS STUDY WENTY-SIX days from today the voters of T the nation will have an opportunity to par ticipate in the highest privilege of citizenship— that of selecting men and women throughout the country that will form a part of our govern ment, together with certain laws under which the electorate shall be bound. We are wondering how many voters on No vember 8, will emulate those careless voters in Washington that elected a mule for precinct committeeman? Sounds funny doesn’t it? But it actually happened. The moral as we see it is that people, all of the people, should not only go to the polls and vote, but should acquaint themselves before hand as to who and what they are voting for. An official voters pamphlet is mailed out by the Secretary of the State to ever registered voter in the state. Contained in this voters pamphlet is contained all of the measures upon which every good citizen will be expected to pass his opinion in the form of voting. For this reason no person will have the opportunity to say that he had no chance to inform himself about the proposed laws. As to the candidates, seeking office, that re mains solely within the discriminatory judg ment of the voters— it is for them to decide if a candidate’s “platform" coincides with the vot ers views on government. Upon this matter the voter must attend meetings, read newspapers or what ever other means at his disposal to inform himself. The main thing is to get out and vote! -tie.
