NYSSA GATE CITY JOURNAL’S PROGRAM ------* ------ Completion of the I-O-N Highway. Passage o f the Proposed $100,000 Road Bonds. Co-operative Marketing Association for Malheur Farmers. ROCK CRUSHER IS A M A T T E R OF O PIN IO N The Ontario Argus, in its last weeks editorial, questions the advisability of the purchase o f a portable rock crusher, which will make avail able ‘stock piles’ throughout the county. The purchase o f this crusher is to be made out of the proposed road bonds for the county. The editorial lauds the Oregon highway com mission as one of the ‘most efficient road build ing organizations in the United States.’ Well, perhaps we have not been around very much, hut if that gang is efficient in highway building, we would like to interpose a question as to why so much highway building has been done on the coast, and it is impossible to complete one o f the most vital roads in the state, the I-O-N. They are efficient all right. For any road that will give Portlanders a short-cut to seaside resorts, but the farmers in this section can increase their haul ing costs to California markets by about forty per cent. As to the ‘grave doubts’ to the advisability of the purchase o f the portable rock crusher, as ex pressed in the editorial, there is also ‘grave doubts’ as to whether the state highway com- misison, in buying crushed rock from individual companies, is getting their rock as cheaply as if they had rock crushing outfits of their own. Just because the commisison follows the system of buying crushed rock, is no sign that it is the cheapest method. The Amalgamated Sugar company, which is building a $2,225,000 refin ery in Nyssa, found it expedient to buy their own rock crusher, AND TH E IR P L A N T W IL L BE FINISH ED T H IS Y E A R ! The State o f Califonia has found it advisable to own their own rock crushing outfits for their highway construction, and if anyone has been over California’s highways, which incidentally, gives the farmer a chance to get their trucks to markets, they will find another ‘most efficient road building organization, etc’. It is easy to be an obstructionist even the Bible, the best seller in the world, has been criticized. TH E CH AMBER OF COMMERCE DANCE Past issues of the Journal have carried stor ies concerning dances that have been sponsored by the Nyssa Chamber o f Commerce. These dances are the answer to the question “ What does the Chamber o f Commerce do?” Every member of the Chamber of Commerce, which means practically every business and professional man in Nyssa, is anxious that these dances be for the entertainment o f the people living in and around Nyssa. There is no thought o f profit in them. It is simply a plan, as said be fore, to offer to those who like to dance, the opportunity to enjov a good dance to the music o f a good orchestra. The next dance to be sponsored by the Chamber o f Commerce, will be held April 28. The proceeds o f this dance will go toward the Nyssa Baseball team fund, and it is the hope o f those in charge of the dance that the public in general will turn out in even larger numbers than in the past, to help give Nyssa a real team this year. Even those who perhaps may not dance this offers an opportunity to all to help toward a better baseball team for Nyssa. Tickets for this dance will be on sale by most members o f the Chamber )of Commerce, and all that will be necessary is to make it known that you want a ticket to the Baseball Dance, to be obliged. and others concerning the Act will prayer and it* immediate eifect up what is happening under the pro go Just that muuh further toward on discordant human conditions is i visions of that law.
