Thomas Herbison of Chicago was convicted of steal ing from his mother-in-law, after being caught in lhe act by his sister-in-law. George Meacham, a barber of Canterbury, Eng., was jailed for 30 days for kissing a girl customer. Robert Lorgan of Chicago was arrested for begging, but the judge dismissed the case when Lorgan played a mouth-organ solo in the court room. The wife of E. J. Saunders of Preston, Eng., present- him with triplets on his birthday. Sir Rowland Blades, lord mayor of London, received a request from a farmer in Canada who wants a bride weighing 170 pounds. Seven sons of William Geldridge of Swansea, Wales, are members of the police force. A meteor which fell recently in Austria caused thousands of peasants to desert their homes in panic. Mrs. W. R. Lowrey of New York swore in court that she could not remember the date of her wedding. A bag containing $5,000, dropped from a train by Mrs. A .H. Howells, was found near the track and returned to her at Vancouver, B.C. As a penalty for dancing the Charleston, 30 girl students at Bromley, Eng., were denied their spring vacation. An American hunter, who has killed 620 lions in Africa, is now looking for some real excitement and has come home to get married. One E. E. Green of Tennessee, described in a press dispatch as “co-wrecker” of a bank, got ten years. No doubt a co-wreck verdict. After reading his “Today” column for several years, we gather that Mr. Brisbane is gradually coming around to look with favor upon the airplane. Dr. Pasot of Paris claims that he can make a woman look 20 years younger by means of plastic surgery. Most of them look that way now from the neck down. Nearly a thousand girls were picked over to secure one of a suitable type to represent Longfellow’s Evange line. Casting the part of Eve would have been less diffi cult. The subject of how to live long is always of interest, which perhaps accounts for the eagerness of the average mortal to seize upon various methods which are rec ommended for promoting health and longevity, such as doing daliy exercise to radio music and the like. In spite of all the propoganda on the subject, however, i.here are many wlv» are skeptical regarding the real benefits of strenuous physical activity. One of these wrote a letter to the Cleveland Press, pointing out that Walter Camp, famed athlete and ».iginator of lhe “daily dozen,” died at 65, while he. the writer, had never taken any kind of exercise to speak of and was still in excel lent health, although a great-grandfather. He added that “the longest-lived people are physically lazy but mentally alert.” Commenting on the letter, William Feather, a well known editor, declares that several years ago he adopted a vigorous health program, including vegetarianism, cold baths and the daily dozen, with this result: “Acute indigestion led to the abandonment of vege tarianism on doctor’s orders. Another doctor recom mended discontinuance of cold baths. The daily dozen are still pursued, but faith in them has been shaken by the untimely death of their inventor. Still, we may find many who swear by the health fads and feel that their lives have been saved thereby. As the proverb has it, “What is food for some is black poison to others.” FRIDAY, MAY 13. This month we have another Friday the 13th, long regarded by the superstitious as a particular unlucky day, as both Friday and the number 13 are supposed to have a sinister portent. But so far as the history of America is concerned, it appears that this idea entirely fails to hold true Columbus sailed on his voyage of discovery on Friday and sighted the New World on Friday. The Pilgrim fathers sailed from England on Friday; George Wash ington was born on Friday; the battle of Saratoga, turning point of the Revolution, ended with the surrend er of Burgoyne on Friday; Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown on Friday; just to mention a few of the in cidents favorable to us which occured on that day of the week. Our 13 stripes in Old Glory, representing the 13 orig inal states, have been carried to victory in every war in which we have ever been engaged; France determin ed on the 13th of June, 1778, to aid the American colon ists in the struggle for independence; the cornerstone of the White House was laid on the 13th of October, 1792, and so on. America’s greatest living soldier, General John Joseph Pershing, was born on Friday, September, 13, 1860, and he could hardly be classed as unlucky, either per sonally or in his achievements in behalf of his country. So don’t worry over what may, happen on Friday, May, 13th, unless you just have to worry about some thing and have nothing else to worry about. Political writers are again amusing themselves by picking presidential impossibilities. Mistrial in Sapiro-Ford million-dollar suit because a lady juror talked too much. Who’d have thought it. Shakespeare’s bones are to be removed. It will prob ably be found that the Baconians have picked them clean. It appears that men who have become prominent had the foresight to have photographs taken early in antici pation. Colorado claims to lead the nation in the production of sugar beets. Any claimants to the record for dead beats? A fellow who tries to straddle an issue is like one in the middle of a highway, subject to being hit by both lines of thaffic. ABOUT WOMEN. More extended instruction in the handling of ma chinery, and particularly in the use of electricity, is ad vocated for larm boys by toe federal board of voca tional education, according to I. D. Maltby, southern re gional agent. He declared that electricity is rapidly becoming used to a greater extent on farms, particularly in the South and in other sections where water power is available. For this reason he urges the necessity for requiring vo cational agricultural teachers to study the operation of electrical equipment, so that they may teach the boys under their charge how to employ it in practical farm ing. Recently a specialist in the Department of Agricul ture pointed out that mechanical power can be produced at less than half the cost of animal power. The in creased cost of man power is also an important factor in hastening the employment of a greater number and a larger variety of labor-saving machines. The farmer of the future must have a certain amount of mechanical knowledge, hence the farm boy should begin as early as possible to master the practical opera tion of power-operated machinery, which he must in evitably use if he hopes to lie a successful farmer in the future.
