Mrs Mathison. who has four girls. Donna Willard. Linda Brunk, Joyc, Clason. and Beth McLean, has now completed with them seven different Inter national meals The courst started out with a well-known food in the United States The Mexican meal con sisted of enchiladas, refried beans, gaspacbo. guacomole. along with a centerpiece con taining Mexican souveniers Oriental meals were next on the agenda The girls were given a pair of chop sticks before the course began and were told to practice with them so they could eat their m eals with them The meal was shrimp too yung. fried rice, a salad consisting of man darian orange slices, and Jap anese cookies The first time the girls made their fried n ee it didn't turn out quite right so Mrs Mathison had them make it again in their next meal with Terivaki The rice was prepared in what is called a Chinese Wok. and turned out "just right .” The last meal of the oriental unit was made at the table which is one of the Japanese customs Sukiyaki. fried noodles, and steamed rice Jasmin tea was the drink served with the meal The Italian unit began with antipastos, which is a relish plate, followed by chicken cacciatora and buttered noodles Insalata Verde (a green salad I was served with an Italian dressing The girls last meal was in the presence of a dinner guest. Mrs Nancy Eckland. who is a VHS library aide, and was invited to eat their Lasagne, garlic French bread, and a tossed green salad The advanced Homemaking Class is now baking breads The girls have made chocolate eclairs. Danish pastry , flaming crepe suzette, cherry flan made in special flan pans, and plan to be making Scandinavian Rose ettes on the Monday after Spring vacation Mrs Mathison said. The girls and I both had much fun with the International Foods Unit, and the Breads Unit.” The girls in Home Ec I are now on their sewing unit, and are making pants most of them with tops, a few girls are making dresses The girls choose their own pattern but are required to learn from their pattern how to put in set-in sleeves, to put on buttons, to read a guide sheet, to fit and use a pattern Mrs Mathison said. "They are just learning •the b asics’.” Mrs Mathison requires that the pants and dresses are out of a cotton material since it is the girls first year in Homemaking. and it is their first project The tops can be made out of other material such as a cotton knit, because the girls are not re quired to complete a top. and it is an experience for them to learn to sew on a knit material Many nice outfits are coming along from the class and some are close to finishing their projects Mrs Mathison is very pleased with all 12 of the g irls’ but in a teasing manner said. "When they're quiet and working, they are a good class, but when thev get to acting silly, Oh boy!” H ig h Wriler Feels Sorry For "South-paws" Can the left handed student survive in the right handed world? VHS has several students who are left-handed and have been forced to adjust to a right handed style of life Many of the pencil sharpeners are set up for the right-handed person which makes them very difficult for the left handed person to use Doors in the school are also set up for right-handed people How many of you right-handed people would like to be called "righty” ’ How many of you call left-handed people "Lefty''? How many of you when you want to make a left turn say. "hand a Louie” : Why is a right turn called a "Ralfy” ? How many of you right-handed people would like to be called North Paw ’ So the next time a left-handed person is having trouble using an object made for a right-handed person, perhaps instead of scoff ing we might say, ‘Thank-you left handed person for all the inconvenience you have to en dure because you were born left-handed ” Cake Goes Through A Lot for Birthday Adam 's Choir Perform ance W e ll Received The Adam's High School choir, from Portland gave a profes sional quality performance at VHS on Thursday, March 14 They were under the direction of Norman Carothers Thev first sang ‘Sunshine in my Soul and ‘The Music Played .” The first of the two selections was high lighted by an excellent soloist, Mark Bosworth An ensemble, consisting of 16 people then formed directly in front of the student body Thev sang. "Sing me a Song.” ' Where is the Love,” and a couple of numbers unfamilar to VHS The girls outnumbered the guys, so one song two girls needed part ners to “act out' the selection, thev ' grabbed” Rory Dunaway and Dale Webb out of the student body The ensemble sang several selections from “Godspell.” These selections are as follows flows "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord,” “Oh Bless the Lord, my Soul.” “Day by Day," “You are the Light of the World,” “Turn Back Oh Man,” “We Beseech Thee." and finally returned to the song “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord ” For the last song Mark Bos worth did a solo part, with the other members of the ensemble joining in the finish On each of the pieces the ensemble took different posi tions on risers and the floor, and acted out some of their select ions while singing It gave a very' pleasant and interesting effect which was noted by the reaction of the audience The ensemble joined the rest of the chorus on the risers A student director. Steve Glavan. led the choir in two pieces entitled. "ThouSwell,” and “Joy to the World ' The last selection was, ”1 Want to be Ready," with Cindy Lind Holm as soprano soloist The chorus then departed into the VHS band room The student body enjoyed the group so much that after a long and arduous applause they were favored with an encore The ehsemble sang, “Make The World Go Away.” The choir goes on a week-long tour every year The students each donate 125 to pay for expenses They have gone to Canada and California The choir is supported by two expert pianist.
