î . ns •« » g m O c m o n ia E a g l e 4 T H U R S D A Y , D E C S. 1*72 «MS»™«»— —— I II- III : Studente Spark •Christmas Joy The students and faculty are starting to get in the Christmas Spirit by decorating the halls and rooms of the school and helping the grade school with their Christmas program The National Honor Society has decorated the high school halls, helped bag the candy for the grade' school Christmas program, and also helped Santa with handing out the candy The NHS also bagged candy for the grade school Christmas pro gram this year and probably w ill be * sacking the candy every year from now on The candy was bought from donations irom many people and groups of the town. Santa w ill have help this year in passing out candy from some of the members of NHS Sue Garner Marsha Sturdevant. and Debbie Banta w ill be helping the little kids to get to Santa safely Walt Floeter Scott Cameron, and Randy Roberts w ill be passing out candy to the older kids and grown-ups and helping the people who visit Santa lo leave the stage Kathy Medges. Kay Grimsbo and Susan Smejkal de corated the senior tree that is always seen at the intersection of the four hallways The decoration of the Christmas tree is a senior tra dition that has been going on for many years. Kay Grimsbo and Sue Smejkal made the tree stand and the tree was donated by Ken Smejkal. The faculty members even stop ped being "Old Scrooges” and decorated the faculty room Gordon Crowston made a very nice fire place for Santa. while Ellen Hanson and Ann Westerberg*decorated the rest of the faculty room The public is invited to the high school Christmas program tomor row . Friday, at 1 p.m. Boyi Almost Die in Snow Stalled Car Jim Koch and Irv in Normand narrowly escaped death on their way home from Seaside late Mon day night Thev were snowbound in a foot of snow at the Sunset Summit Koch and Normand left the car running and went to sleep The State police found them barely breathing about 3:30 a m. The two were rushed to the hospital in Seaside where they stayed for several hours and under went some tests Koch is a former student of VHS and Normand w ill graduate with the class of 73 in June THE TIMBERLINE COMPILED BY THE VERNONIA HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM CLASS Loggers Down Clatskanie in Season Opener The VHS Loggers used their fast break offense to defeat the Clats kanie Tigers by a score of 5» to 44. in a game played at Vernonia Satur day. December 16 The first game of the season saw the Loggers shoot a very cold 38 percent and turn the bail over 29 times However. Clatskanie didn't do any better They turned the ball over 25 times and shot an ice cold 29 percent from the field Even with the poor shooting and the amount of turnovers the Log gers still managed to lead all through the game Top shooter for Vernonia was Rick Davis with 17 points. E arl Abercrombie. Rob Hahmever. and Ole Bergerson. each tallied seven points Mickey Borst tossed in six points. Gordy Crowston, Mike Smith, and Keith Gardner, got four points each. Dave Deckebach and two points and Tom M erritt, one Top rebounder for VHS was Ole Bergerson with 13. On Clatskanie’s team the top gun was Steve Rusche who dropped in 12 points The other big scorers tor the Tigers were Roger H ill and Dan Hueth each with nine points. The result of the JV game was that Vernonia lost a close one to Clatskanie, by a score of 67 to 66 Typing I Students Show Good Progress The students in Gary Geist’s Typing I class are making rapid progress so far this year Those who are typing over 40 words per minute are as follows: Wendy Wilson 47. Decem ber 23. at 8 * m at the First Christian Church The program, featuring the high school chorus, is based upon the Festival of Lessons and Carols, which has been held annually at King’s College in England for over fifty years, and which is gaining in popularity among choral groups in this country The priigram w ill be preceded by a fifteen minute recital of Christ mas organ music. Following that, the VHS chorus w ill process to the front of the church while singing "Once in Royal David’s C ity,” the Christmas carol that always opens all programs based upon the one sung at King's College The chorus w ill then sing a selec tion of Christmas music, including "Gesu Bambino,” “ The Snow Lay On the Ground." "Ding. Dong. Merrily on H igh." and "O Holy N igh t." A girls ensemble w ill sing the Austrian carol. "S till. Still. S till." Ample opportunity w ill be provid ed for audience participation in fa m iliar carols, including “ Silent N ight." "H a rk ! The Herald Angels Sing.’ ’ "What Child is TH is." and "Angels We have Heard on High ” The five lessons, recounting Christ's coming and His birth, w ill be read by Roxyne O’Neil. Jeffrey Reck. Diane T u r man and -Bob Warburton. all mem bers of the chorus This program, which lasts ap proximately an hour, is designed for all members of the community who enjoy listening to and singing Christinas music. Eagles Defeat Welding Classes Given at VHS Logger Five at 'Charity Row' A beginning industrial welding class is to be offered at the high school starting January 4 at 7 p.m. for individuals, whether they are adults, graduate students, crafts men or high school students (high school students arrange with the principal), it has been announced by Donald Kahler, vo-ag instructor Fundamentals in arc stick weld ing w ill be presented with facilities for approximately 15 students with 10 meetings scheduled and fess of $17 per student. Randy failed to see Keith backing out and. as a result, backed right into Keith, who had stopped half-way out the parking place, the witnesses related The accident drew many spec tators. as many of the students that go to the grade school for lunch had to come and take a look at the damages Sophomore Injures Leg In Basketball Game Rob Clason, a sophomore at VHS, suffered severely pulled ligaments in his lefl ankle Sunday, November 26. while plaving basketball at the EL'B Church Rob said he was going in for a rebound and came down on the side of his foot The ankle bothered him the following week and he went to tin' doctor December 3 and had X-rays taken. The doctor said trial the ligaments were pulled badly and he would have to wear a cast to keep the ankle from moving Rob doesn’t like the extra burden on his lower leg and can't wait until December 27 or 28 when he gets the cast removed Players Still Liked, Pep Assemblies Aren't Somebody up there just doesn't like pep assemblies Anyway, that's the way it seems to be around Vernonia High For the past three weeks at the high school, games have been sche duled with pep assemblies preced ing However, as of now, not one pep assembly has taken place, even though the games were played Cancellations were mainly due to not having school “ So boys, even if you haven't had a pep assembly yet, we still love you! ” Clatskanie JV's Top Vernonia Saturday. December 16, the VHS JV basketball team opened their '72-73 season with a non-league. 67-66, loss to Clatskanie Vernonia jumped out to a 21-11 first quarter lead, then held off a second quarter Clatskanie rally to take a 34-31 halftime lead After a see-saw third quarter battle and Vernonia holding a 52-48 advantage, the Diggers turned on the scoring and enjoyed as much as an 11-point lead early in the fourth quarter Midway in the quarter. Clatskanie installed a press on the Diggers which forced costly turn overs. This, coupled with five of Vernonia's nine players fouling out. helped Clatskanie take a 67-63 lead with just over two minutes left Vernonia, with only four players in the game, came within one point of Clatskanie on a Tim Titus three-point play After a Clatskanie turnover and a Vernonia traveling violation.
