No doubt, this Is a topic of prim e eoncern to many of Columbia County's residents, and in all fairness, these questions should he answered to their satisfaction. * I built Northwest Piling at Scappoose, and attempted to buy some of the raw materials from the large tim ber eompany in Columbia County, but in order to do so. it would have to be on terms. I felt that this would make my company just another one of their puppets, and I w ill be a puppet to no one. The big tim ber eompany built its own pole plant In Portland. V I I bought from private tim ber owners, stale tim ber, independent luggers, and open m arket. In the last year of business before selling, we had a gross sales larger than this big tim ber com pan v had In their Portland pole yard. i •5 X I had no connection with the big timber companies.
