Bush Spring Handi cap was somewhat curtailed by tha week end weather buj some of the hardiest had their swings. For the most part the scores turn ed in were about par with Jthe weather, not so good. It is still a wide open tournament and with another week end to go should show some better scores than those now posted. In almost every case one round was pretty good and the other far below that rat ing. Several had good first nines and disastrous 2nd nines, others vice Versa. Ken Nanson, Dick Hale, Bill Nelson, Les Gallioway, Wes Bolmeier all will vouch for that statement. For those of you who w?re out of town or held back by the weather your 18 holes can be played anytime until Sunday night, Jun? 5. Anyone can win this one. Next Saturday is National Golf Day. You and I will play against Ed Furgal, National Op ?n Cham pion or Babe Zaharias. They will play without a handicap and w? will deduct our handicap from our gross score. If our net score is lower than their gross score we will receive a medal from the National P.G.A. and Life maga zine, sponsors of the day. All proceeds go to c'harities selected by the sponsors. A sweepstakes will be held in connection with this National Golf Day. Large welcomes go out this week to Ken Nanson. Homer Ful ler and Pete Norris, who took out memberships this last week end. Young blood in golf club is si- miliar to a blood transfusion to a person who is ill, stimulating and invigorating. Have you taken in the Jimmy Demaret show on channel 6? An ther good golf clinic featuring one of the countries best golfers with guests such as Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. You will find it well worth your time. The June 12 date has been okehed by Kent Bauersfeld for the day when an Independence team will be here to me?t a Ver nonia golf team. —Office Supplies at the Eagle_ Early Vemonia History Viewed | A very good attendance of mem- ! bers and friends was had at the , May meeting of the Columbia County Historical Society in the Vernonia Evangelical church Tuesday, May 24, with a program of music furnished by the lqçal high school under the leadership of Mr. Johnson, music instructor. Number-s consisted of vocal num bers by nine girls, also baritone, j trombone, saxaphon.? and clarinet solos by individual students, who performed very creditably to the delight of those present. Several were in attendance from Longview, Washington, including Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Watson and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Meilis, old time residents of this county. Others were present from Kelso and Ridgefield, Washington and several from Portland. Judge J. W. Whipple brought greetings from the county court and gave words of encourage ment to the society in their work of striving for a mus?un» for hous ing historical materials. He of- i fered transportation to move burr- I stones from an early grist mill in Vernonia to a storage place on i the county fairgrounds, so these ! might be saved for a museum. A. L Parker and Walter McClintock were appointed on a committee to arrange for the removal of the stones from their present loca tion. Mrs. Walter Parker told of the early history of the school in the Keasey district and showed early records which listed teacher’s sa- • laries from $25 to $32 in the ! 1880's. Earliest school listed in i Vernonia area was in 1876, with [ Mr. Ozias Chernngton serving as teacher. Vernonia was named for Vernona Cherrington, daughter of Ozias Cherrington, though she never came west to live. Mr. Oscar Weed told further facts of early school and church history. The next meeting of the society is scheduled for June at the fair grounds.
