GEMS OF THOUGHT Social Security 4 Couples Hear Bee a us ? of the increasing num- I ber of social security claims being | filed by Columbia county resi- dents, service at the social secur- ity itinerant station at the St. Helens court house will be ex- tended, according to Ev. Cum- mins, field representative serving this area Beginning with the February 2nd visit the represen- tatives will stop at the court house every Monday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Service was pre viously provided twice a montn. According to Cummins, the fil ing of claims at the St. Helens itinerant station doubLd during 1952. As far as social security is concerned, 1952 was an important year in many respects. The ma jor changes made by congress in 1950 became fully effective in 1952 for many peopl? who had not had social security protec tion before. Benefit payments reached an all-time high through the use of a more liberal formula which became op. rative in mid- 1952. BIRKENFELD — Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Baker. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Larson. Cooking Club Backs Drive for Old Paper The Twelve Burnt Crumbs, 4-H cooking club, are conducting a paper drive and would appreci ate people saving and bundling all old scrap paper for them. Whiskey ' | | i j ' Many of the increasing claims can be accounted for by the fact that each year more people are reaching age 65 who are insured undr the social security act. But not all the new social security beneficiaries are just 65 by any means, reports Cummins. James McDonald’s claim well .llustrates a fact about social security often misunderstood. There is no age limit on coverage under social security. Years ago McDonald worked on jobs covered by social security but had only 5 of the 6 quarters he need d to be eligi ble to receive social security benefits. McDonald found that he could fully qualify for mini mum benefits provided he worked on a job covered by the act and was paid at least $50.00 during a calendar quarter. McDonald did just that. McDonald then filed a claim and is now receiving monthly benefits. Ordinarily, in formation about the social se curity claims of individuals is strictly confidential. McDonald agreed to the release of informa tion about his claim when told that his case might serve to in form others of their rights. McDonald, a long-time resident of St. Helens, is, at the age of 88 the oldest person who ever quali fied for social security benefits in Columbia county, according to Cummins.
