Ver nonia maintained its unbeaten league status by snubbing a Lion rally which just fell short of tying the count. The St. Helens B. team dubbed the visitors, 52 to 31. This Log’ er-Lion meeting was a decided upset for the dopesters because the Vernonia win was the first over the Saints on their floor since 1937 and the second time the Loggers have won a net fray from them since the same date. In addition to losing the B game the second string of the Triggers suffered a set-back that will hinder them for the rest of the season. Ouincy Next for Grade Quintet The Washington grade school Toppers will play their second basketball game of the season Friday when they go to Quincy, their coach, Paul Gordon, said early this week. He listed his first string team at that time and indicated that the record wasn't going to look so good at the end of the season this year as last because through graduation five of last year’s players are gone. The Topjiers started the season last Friday when they met War ren there and lost the tally 33 to 13. W. 7 Johnson’s Selective Service Rule Explained Clarifying provisions of the se lective service act, Colonel Francis W. Mason, deputy state director of selective service for Oregon, said that local boards have no authority under the present law to accept volunteers for immediate induction unless they are over 26. Colonel Mason observed that the general misunderstanding probably arose from the fact that local boards were empowered to ac cept volunteers under the selective service act which expired in 1947. “The present law is very clear,” Colonel Mason said, and he quoted from recent instructions sent to all Oregon local boards as follows: “Except in respect to registrants 26 years of age or over who may consent to induction, the selective service act of 1948 contains no provision authorizing the induc tion of volunteer registrants before the time that such registrants are selected for induction according to their dates of birth as prescribed in selective service regulations. Girl Improves After Serious Burn Injury TREHARNE — Little Sandra Cookson, eldest dauyh’er of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Cookson, who was so severly burned when her clothing caught f:re, is improved although she is still in critical con dition. She is at the Emanuel hos pital and will remain there for several weeks yet. There has been a great deal of sickness in the neighborhood these last few weeks. Everybody has had or is down with the flu. • Juniors to Give ’Enter Angela Friday evening, January 14, at the Washington grade school the Junior class is presenting “Enter Angela,” which is under the direc tion of Miss Claire Serirg. “Enter Angela,” a three-act comedy, is the story of trials and tribulations of the Hatters, a lively, temperamental family who are bubbling over with artistic talent; at least they are convinced of this. Octavia Hatter, the mother, who at one time was a famous opera star, is ably played by Lois Frank. The part of Angela Hatter, the daughter, whose only desire is to act is well done by Carol Lobdell. Lonnie Justice does an excellent job as Anthony Hatter, the son whose only love in life is machinery. The part of Ronald, the other son, who is an accomplished pianist is well-handled by Charles Tapp. “Any registrant who is within the age group 19 through 25 may apply at an army recruiting sta tion for enlistment in the regular army for a period of 21 months’ service which is the same period of service for which he is liable under the selective service act of 1948.
