6 Thursday, February 1, 1945 Cases of Illness Are Reported Among People In Riverview Community RIVERVIEW — After near ly recovering from a severe at tack of tonsilitis little Mary Mil- lis suffered a relapse accompa nied by croup which caused her to be a very sick girl the last two weeks and still has her con fined to bed. Mrs. S. V. Malmsten of Salem spent the week end at the home of her son, Leonard, who is suffer ing with the prevailing epidemic. Mrs. Marion Hall of Portland came Sun. for a visit with her sister, Mrs. Ralph Mahar, while Mrs. Larry Grice and children of Banks spent from Fri. until Sun. evening at the parental Mahar home. This week we can welcome back a former neighbor, Clarence Gee. Having rented his Vernonia property he moved Sun. into his Riverview home. George Bell, who spent last week at Wheeler taking treat ments for various rheumatic ail ments, is now quite ill with flu and complications at his home here. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Shephard and daughters, Zoe Rita and Pen ny Lee, of Longview, Wn. were welcome visitors over the week end at the parental J. M. Peachy home. The school children are busy collecting paper for the paper drive. Ernest Gann of the United States Navy has been spending a few days with his brother Cecil and family. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Riggle and Mrs. Edith Riggle of Buxton and Mrs. James Gibbons of Oak land, Cal., were Sunday visitors at the B. Tallman home. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Harkson attended the farewell party giv en at Cochran Friday night for Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Lambdin and children. Mr. Lambdin has been office manager for the Long Bell Lumber Co. for the past eight years and has been transferred to Weed, Cal. Last week ended the first half of the school year and the week was spent giving achievement tests. Friday was report card day. Tony Lopez had the cast tak en off his leg Friday. He received a double fracture while playing on the school grounds two weeks before Christmas. Betty Hickey of the marines, youngest daughter of Mrs. Ray McCoy, has finished boot train ing at Le Jeune N. Carolina and has gone into motor transport for four weeks training. Almy Hickey, Spurs, was re cently transferred from Cinncinn- ati, Ohio to St. Louis, Missouri into a Coast Guard office. Mr. and Mrs. Ray McCoy transacted business in Astoria last Tuesday. workers, J. R. Beck, state farm labor advisor in the Extension service, pointed out. He pre dicted even greater use of wom en, boys and girls from towns and cities will bi necessary. Full utilization of returning war veterans who desire farm work was suggested by W. A. Schoenfeld, dean and director of agriculture, who pointed out that farm work offered many possibil ities for these former servicemen. He emphasized the need, however, for individual attention to each veteran to assure placement in the proper job. Army authorities have indi cated that an increased number of prisoners of war will be avail able for agricultural work, it was reported. To Close Deal Harry King and Paul Gordon, members of the West Oregon F. • lectric cooperative board of di rectors, will go to Portland today to sign papers transferring the Oregon Gas and Electric property to the REA, which s'gnir.g will complete the purchase which has been under negotiati n for some time. Jewett A. Bush, sponsor of the REA, will also be present at the signing. REA service will start here as of February 1. POWS EARN $4,000,000 Prisoners of war, working on private contract jobs, earned ap proximately $4,000,000 for the Treasury of the United States during October, the War Depart ment announced. More Farm Aid To Be Needed More women and children from Oregon towns and cities will be needed to harvest 1945 crops than were used this past year, farm labor assistants from 16 Oregon counties agreed recently at a conference at Oregon State college.
