6 Thursday, February 1Ó, 1944 Verne Hansen, Natal grange! Daniel and Donald Heman, Beav er Valley grange. The Pomona grange charter was draped in memorium of the late A. L. Morris 'of Yankton grange and Narcissus Parcher of Beaver Valley grange. One of the largest classes in the history of the Columbia county Pomona grange was init iated into the degree of Pomona. The work was beautifully and impressively exemplified by the degree team. Mrs. Laura Carmichael of Natal directed the lecturer’s hour with a program of singing and instrumental numbers. Vernonia Eagle “We Are Buying War Bonds—Are You?” STUDENTS GET EYE TESTS Part of Sgt. Edward Slraube's left foot was shot away at Ferry ville, near Bizerte, North Africa. At Halloran General Hospital, Staten Island, N. Y., they are building up his foot again. Sgt. Straube, from Perth Amboy, N. J., buys War Bonds regularly. Those Who Are In It HOME ON FURLOUGH Sgt. Bill Shepard arrived home Thursday for a two-weeks fur lough from Fort Bragg North Carolina to visit with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Shep ard. Sgt. Shepard has been study ing as radiotechnician in the field artillery and expects to be shipped overseas shortly after h> reports back to Fort Bragg. GETS HOSPITAL DISCHARGE Word was received this week by Mr. and Mrs. Howard Frank in a letter from their son, Cpl. Elgus R. Frank that he had been discharged from the hospital at Fort Bliss. Texas where he had spent 25 days with the scarlet fever. He also stated that he is hopeful of getting a furlough Boon. HOME ON FURLOUGH Lytle Green arrived home Fri day to spend five days of his furlough visiting his wife and daughter and friends. He is with the navy and expects to be ship ped out as soon as he reports to his base. RECEIVES PROMOTION Howard L. Cornutt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cornutt, re ceived a promotion from cap tain to major in the 96th infan try division at Camp White, Ore gon. HOME ON LEAVE SK2/c Douglas DeCew arrived here Sunday, January 30 on leave from Camp Perry, Virginia to visit Mrs. DeCew and Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Hieber. He left again February 6 to return to Camp Perry for assignment to duty. GETS TRANSFER Word was received this week that Lyman Hawkin Jr., has been transfered to San Francisco and is stationed at Treasure Island. He has jus£ completed an exten sive course at Houston Univer sity, Houston, Texas at which time he received his petty offic er rating of radio technician third class. He will continue this training at his present station where he expects to be for about six months. His wife intends to join him soon. Sgt. Bernard Ilello, 22, of New York, was wounded by snipers dur ing the Sicilian campaign. His grandparents live in Naples, and he has a brother in the army. Both buy War Bonds regularly. Do you do as much? ATTENDS UNIVERSITY Aviation cadet Robert A. Ken^ attended the University of South Carolina at Columbia, S. C. since December 23. He is studying physics, math, recognition, navi gation, flight and oode and ex pects to finish his schooling April 1st. . J MAKES TRIP IN JEEP In a letter received by Mrs. 11. II. King from her son, George, he writes that he has been trans ferred and it is the first time for a long time that he has been privileged to live in the barracks. He also mentioned that he made his trip in a jeep. TRANSFER RECEIVED In a letter received by Mrs. II. E. Stevenson from her broth er, Pvt. Chester IL Bell, he in forms her that he has been trans ferred to Corsica Island and likes it much better than North Africa. He said there were mountains and more mountains and he thought it was a very beautiful place. He wishes to be remembered to all of his friends. Pvt. Bernard Heidemann’s left leg will be two inches shorter when he is disc&argfed from Hal loran. He was wounded by a Ger man bullet during the operations in Sicily last August. His home is Chicago. He has been in traction since Sept. He’s buying bonds. Technician 5th Grade John A. Wisniewski, 25, of Door, Mich., lost his right eye, three fingers and suffered chest wounds from shrapnel in the fight to capture Tunis. He is now recovering at Halloran and is a regular War Bond purchaser. Mass Meeting Set Grange Meeting For Februaiy 13 Held Feb. 5 A mass meeting will be held at the Methodist church in St. Helens on February 13 at 3 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the causes and remedy for the delin quency problem. Wesley Johnson of Portland will be the main speaker. Mr. Johnson has a radio broadcast every morning except Sunday over KWJJ at 9:15 a.m. which is a part of his crusade against liquor. It is hoped that many Columbia county people and preachers will be there as this will be a campaign to make Columbia county dry this year. Milton Lie berman, 27, of Brooklyn, is “Clark Gable.” He was wounded in Sicily last August and has been at I’al- loran since October. The 162nd session of the Co lumbia county pomona grange convened at the Fern Hill grange hall Saturday, February 5 with Worthy Master Ray Tarbell of Yankton presiding. The Fern Hill grange entertained. The pest control contest spon sored by the Pomona grange was won by Warren grange and the Vernonia juvenile grange, both receiving first place in their re spective divisions. A resolution recommending that the farm gas and fuel ra tioning now handled by the OPA be transferred to the farm trans portation committee, which is ap pointed by the triple A, was ap proved and accepted by Pomona grange at this session. The farm transportation committee is rep resented by seven farm organiza tions which are familiar with farm needs and requirements. To -the service flag of Colum U.5. 1943 Miss Ruth Peffley, county health nurse and Ethel Fortner, representative of the state board of health, were at the Washing ton grade school Monday to ex amine the students eyes and were glad to report that there were no serious cases in the local school.
