The books are designed for Protestant, ’ Catholic or Hebrew and contain ing prayers, services, a wide range of favorite hymns and many patriotic airs. GERMAN SUBS TAKE PRISONERS As the threat of their U-boats to United Nations shipping was reduced, German submarine com manders resorted to taking as prisoners the masters and chief engineers of such merchant ves sels as they were able to sink. The obvious intent of this prac tice, says the U. S. war shipping administration, has been to de prive the allies of the service of experienced ship officers. BORNEO HAS JAP LANGUAGE DAY “Japanese language day” will be enforced upon the inhabitants of Netherlands Borneo either once a week or once a month, according to plans of the Japan ese occupation authorities. On this day the inhabitants are to be forced to use the Japanese lan guage. BRITISH USE AMERICAN DRIED EGGS The British are now using dried eggs from the United States at the rate of about 134 million pounds a year. Consum ers in all parts of England told an American investigator recent ly. “We can’t do without Ameri can dried eggs.” Each Britfth adult may have a 5-ounce pack age, equivalent to one dozen dried eggs each four-week period and children may have two pack ages for the same period. The allotment was doubled for De cember and January—as a spec ial Christmas gift. CITY BUILT UNDERGROUND In 1941 when large Russian industrial enterprises were being transplanted to the Urals, a party of 10,000 workers arrived in Taghil' to turn a peacetime factory into a military undertak ing. The workers were given 10 days to build themselves a city underground. They finished it in eight days, with barber shops, laundries, bath houses, dining rooms, a polyclinic, and a club. Now, two years old, Isai City, as it is now called, has its own laws and customs. People live in close quarters with only room for a bed and a chair apiece, yet the health record is average and the cleanliness excellent. FRENCH WOMEN JOINS AUXILIARIES Three thousand French women in North Africa have been mo bilized by the French National committee of Liberation to serve in the auxiliaries of the French fighting forces. At lease 5,000 more are expected to be organiz ed before spring. CZECH CONSCRIPTS JOIN BRITISH Eleven Czech boys who had been forced into the German army were captured by the Brit ish and as prisoners of war re cently reached England by way of Tunisia. In England^ they were released and put into British un iforms preparatory to leaving for the replacement unit. At last they were preparing to fight on the side they preferred. HOW DUTCH GET RAZOR BLADES Men desiring to buy five new razor blades in occupied Holland must turn in Ito a licensed razor * blade dealer five old blades which are neither rusty nor damaged. Purchases of blades from an unlicensed dealer are forbidden. Vernonia, Oregon Australians are said to bo chuckling over the report turn ed in by a heavy bomber pilot after he had blasted a Japanese airstrip in the occupied Nether lands East Indies. It read : “Beg to report honorable airstrip has lost face.” HORSES’ MANES, TAILS SHEARED Because ofi a shortage of horse hair, the government of Rumania recently ordered manes and tails of all horses shorn. Thorough bred horses were excepted. USE OF WAR PRISONERS ON FARMS CONSIDERED Possibility of using prisoners of war in farming and industry in U. S. areas where free labor is not available have been stud ied by representatives of WMC and the war department. Limit ed use of prisoners on farms was begun last summer. The em ployer is required to pay the wage prevailing in his communi ty, and the prisoner gets credit of 80 cents a day for personal expenditures, the remainder go ing to the government for camp maintenance. PRODUCTION OF FARM MACHINERY TOLD Farm machinery production for the year beginning July 1. will be about the same as for the current year, but the war pro duction board warns that the recent schedules issued may be altered any time should circum stances demand such action. More than one million tons of carbon steel production is now tentatively earmarked for the American farmer. LABOR NEEDS FOR AGRICULTURE TOLD The largest single increase in total labor requirements is the seasonal demand in agriculture, according to a recent war man power commission survey of the nation’s manpower needs for the first half of 1944.
