Velda Mellinger, Florence Wall and Millicent Ratkie have return ed from the berry fields where they have been employed during the past five weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brindle are parents of a daughter, Barbara Anne, horn July 17. Mrs. S. A. Childs and Miss Ma bel Childs of Portland visited Sun day at the home of Albert Childs. Mary Ann Childs is visiting at the home of relatives in Portland this week. E. A. Green and son Norman, of Malone, Wash., were here Monday night. E. D. Selden, auditor for the state industrial accident commis sion, was in town yesterday checking up on payrolls. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hartwick and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Luther and son Jimmy attend ed a reunion of the Schlegel family in Portland Sunday at Sellwood park. Seventy-two mem bers of the family were present. Mrs. James Bioyd and sons Harold and Junior are guests this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Rose. Mrs. Rose drove to Portland Tuesday to bring them to Vernonia. Mrs. Ray Buffmire has been ill with a nervous breakdown. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Rich ardson of Portland were Ver nonia visitors yesterday. Mur ton from the general offices of the Miller Mercantile company in Portland, were in Vernonia Mon day evening and Tuesday morn ing. They report a very encour aging pick-up in business both locally and in their other stores. Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Dewey and their guests, Mr. and Mrs. O. Sandvig and Ruby Sandvig of Yakima, Wash., motored to Salem Sunday. Miss Marie Kirkpatrick, a for mer teacher in the Vernonia grade schools, is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fogel this week. Margaret MacDonald spent th» week end at her home here. She is attending the Northwestern School of Commerce in Portland. Joe Wangler, manager of the Safeway store, visited at his home in Vancouver, Wash., and also made a trip to Sheridan, Ore., his former location, during the week end. Jeanne Hughes spent last week at Seaside as the guest of Mrs. J. E. Hawkins. Mr. and Mrs. D. F. DeCew of Salem visited Sunday at the home of Mrs. DeCew’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Hieber.
